Default Ever had a run-in with a neighbor?

Had a lovely experience last night.

I live on a corner in a neighborhood. People tear through the stop sign and speed around the corner day and night. It's great. Last night some gem did it while I was outside with my wife and one of our daughters. I point to the stop sign as he drives by me, so he stops, backs up, and asks me what my problem is.

I told him my problem is that I have young children and it'd be nice if people obeyed stop signs and speed limits. I asked if he was a visitor or homeowner, he said owner. I asked where he lived (ok, maybe I shouldn't have asked), and he told me "none of your f*ing business." I said that, actually, as a homeowner and HOA board member, people running stop signs is my business. He told me "I don't give a shit what f*ing board you're on" and sped off.

Apparently his mommy didn't teach him that you don't talk like that in front of children.

Anyway, it probably wasn't my business, that's not my point. Point is now my wife is concerned the douche will do something to the house or something. I am not worried, but I don't like the fact that the dork will drive by my house everytime he enters/exists the neighborhood.

Ever had a run-in with your neighbors?

1st off, good for you, i would've done the same thing and wouldn't have hesitated about asking him where he lived.

i probably would've taken it 1 step further and got his license plate # and call the cops on him.

people speed down my road all the time, when i hear them coming, i stop what i'm doing and stare @ them till they are gone.

if their windows are down, i yell @ them to slow down.

Good for you, too!! I have no problem doing it. I don't care if I seem like an old fart - I have kids so I don't get to worry about public perception.

I did get his license plate; it was a nerdy vanity plate so it was easy to remember.

I feel odd calling the police, though. I know they have bigger fish to fry.

I would have just wrote the license plate and reported it to the HOA.

I doubt he will do anything.

I live in an apartment and we had a neighbor above us that had rabbits living on the blacony and their droppings were filling our patio. We didn't say anything but one day they came down, said sorry and said they would be moving out soon. Since they acted first we never had any issues with them.

The new neighbor that moved in next to us had a problem with leaving the trash out in front of their door. I mentioned to them that they are attracting flies and the garbage smells. They don't do it anymore. They do however slam the door whenever they get home or leave. They are annoying.

Plus our apartment has a 25lb limit on dogs and he has this huge labrador. The management has seen it and they are going to do something soon.

my aunt & uncle live on a road that has a lot of speeders in town. someone called the cops to complain about the # of people that speed down their road, the cops started sitting and waiting for people.

that one day we had a party and the cop parked outside their house, they nailed 5 drivers in 2 hours!!!

if it's a big deal, which it is if u've got kids, call them and complain.

keep calling them till they come sit there, after a few tickets the word will spread and it'll stop!!!

my aunt actually got nailed for speeding by the cop on that same road!!

One of the advantages of living at the end of a cul-de-sac...no traffic. But I do have an old lady neighbor that complains about my palm tree leaves hitting her apricot tree.

I never have personally had a problem with a neighbor. I live on a corner and one of my neighbors has a fence up and I've never met them. All my neighbors are older and I get along fine with them. In addition all my neighbors are at least 100 feet from my house so my home theater noise would never be an issue.

My parents neighborhood had an issue about 10 years ago. They lived in a pretty rich neighborhood and it was full of restrictive covenants that home-owners had to agree to, including no fences or external structures, minimum house size, had to have at least a 3 car garage, etc. A doctor bought a house and immediately put an RV in his driveway. Parking an RV was against the rules and when he was informed he was very upset even though it was in his signed homebuyers agreement. He offered to build a separate structure to house the RV, but was told it wasn't allowed. Then he offered to build an addition to the back of the house, and was told that was fine but he couldn't keep the RV in his driveway while it was built. He threw a fit and ended up selling a house he had only been in for a couple weeks because he wanted his RV at his house.

Mine also has restrictive covenants. I'd wager most neighborhoods with active HOAs do, too. I know some people detest them; I love them.

If people were respectful by nature we wouldn't need covenants, but people are not, most could care less if their dog runs over to your yard and takes a huge dump. I like covenants and I hate them at the same time b/c it keeps @$$holes from ****ing up your property value but it levies rules and regs to honest people who sometimes go out of town and their grass gets above 6"

It's nit picky $*!t like that, that really gets on my nerves.

btw...yes I have had a run-in with neighbors and it always involves dogs barking until 4am in the morning. I usually call the cops. I tried to work it out with one lady, but she never fixed her dog. I was to the breaking point of beating that )@(*@()#* senseless, but I don't like jail, so cops were the only way solve it, that and I recorded it b/c they didn't believe me.

Ever see the movie falling down?

Call the local Police and ask that they post an un-marked car there. Get your other neighbors to call too.

At my pareants' house we live down below some neighbors. We own the hill between our house and theirs. Well the idiots are threatening to take us to court over our trees being too tall. The HOA says that the trees have to be level with the neighbor's yard and we maintain that, but they feel that it needs to be lower.

Why do they need to be lower, the only thing new that you will be able to see is our backyard and we deserve the privacy. We have tried to resolve it quietly but the guy is an idiot. Total jerk which I don't understand, he is a pastor at a rather large church in town. I wouldn't expect such immature behavior from a pastor.

To touch on the issue you experienced with the speeder/traffic law disobeyer, I think you were well within your rights to point at the stop sign as you did. I love to do things like that when people are being jerks on the road, especially in neighborhood environments...and even more so when there are kids around. I do (did) my fair share of driving fast, but it is (was) generally limited to freeway driving. Ever since I've been driving, I've always been cautious in neighborhoods because the last thing I want hanging on my conscience is me hurting an innocent kid due to irresponsible driving.

If that guy had the nerve to throw it in reverse, then use profane language to retort to your (seemingly) appropriate gesture to notify them of the stop sign they were running — in the presence of children no less — then they've got issues that are far beyond your control or concern really. I think you did well to make your point known and keep it cool around your kids. It was the best you could do considering the situation you presented to us.

From here, I think pretty much all you can do is simply keep on keeping on; perhaps try to make amends with the driver next time they drive by — if possible — by simply restating your position on the issue. I mean, if they don't get it that you can't just tear around the neighborhood running stop signs, then that will be that and you'll never crack through their skull. My guess is that the only way anything will be resolved, though, is if it is handled outside of the occurrence of the incident itself; i.e. you might need to take it up at a time other than when they're driving. If they speed or run the stop sign in your presence intentionally so as to deliberately spite you, then you take it to the next level and report their plates to the proper authorities — be it the HOA board or law enforcement officials.

there's a little girl a couple houses down that just started riding her bike and I'm so paranoid about running her over I check like 18 times, turn my head, look every which way before backing out at a snail's pace.

it makes me so nervous when I see kids on the street

you should have grabbed him by his collar and dragged him through the drivers side window and proceed to pulvarize his stupid face. I cant stand jagoffs who tear through residential neighborhoods like its the gotdamn Daytona 500. I live in a condo development and I experience situations like this all the time.

So,

1) Call the police and HOA since you have the Plate #

2) We live on a nice quiet street, with a 25mph speed limit..... but the street has been re-done in nice new concrete with wide lanes...... so people think it's the autobahn..... One day, while outside with my son, and the neighbors from both sides (5 kids on one side, 4 on the other) some Jack-hole flew down the street (very common unfortunately) so I took the soccer ball that I was kicking around with the neighbor kids, and booted it into the street....... He tried to stop, but couldn't......... he hit the ball.....

Anyways... he had his windows down already, and looked pissed, and I just said "Oh sorry about that, we were kicking the ball around and apparently you were going way to fast to see it in time"

He didn't say anything..... both my neighbors were outside, and he thought better of it I guess..... Doubt he learned a lesson though..... punk kids
