It's nice to see this finally on bluray. I bought it from CDJapan. The image is good, it looks like the same restoration that Malavida released on DVD in France. Japanese subtitles only, though I have the option to add external subs on my Oppo player.
The one issue I'm having is that the movie definitely has some kind of Soap Opera Effect applied to it. It looks like the frame rate was bumped up. Is this common practice in Japan? Do Japanese tvs display frame rates differently? I checked the settings on my tv and played some other discs. The rest play as they normally do. |

It's definitely 1080i, despite what the case says. (I assume it's an ancient HDTV transfer.) I can't say for certain but it's possible your TV's doing something weird when the signal comes in.

I have Japan Blu-rays that say AVC when it was MPEG-2. Art/specs are often wrong.

Most cases of 1080i content is a pulldown from 23.976/24fps to reduce jutter on interlaced displays. Some TVs and devices can approximate the pulldown pattern and bring interlaced film content back to their original frame rate, but most is done software based in post.
JP BD of Elvira Madigan sounds like it's not only 1080i 60hz, but a field blended conversion from 25fps that also runs faster (which explains the effect your seeing). |

Now that you mention it, the BD does run at the same speed as the Region 2 DVD. There's definitely something weird going on with the JP Blu. It's hard to imagine the upcoming Criterion release being any worse.
