Default 2 questions about AVRs and sound

I just bought an Denon AVR-889 and some speakers. So far, I only have a 2.1 set of speakers. It is not set up yet, but it will be soon.

Question #1: I plan to plug a HDMI cable to output the BD player through the AVR into the the TV. Will I be able to have the sound come out from my TV speakers as well as the Home Theater speakers?

Question #2:
Since I only have a 2.1 setup and that my AVR outputs 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1, will I be able to watch movies on my 2.1 speakers or I will lose too much audio?

thanks for the help

Question #1. I'm not sure. This sometimes varies with the receiver. You can definitely have the sound pass to the TV along with the video, but I don't know if this will interfere with your ability play the audio through your speaker setup or not. Would you want to listen to the TV speakers and your 2.1 setup at the same time? That wouldn't be a great idea.

Question #2. Yes you will be able to watch any movie on your system. When you run the auto setup of your receiver, it will detect how many speakers you have connected and set itself accordingly. Make sure it sets all speakers to small, double-bass to off, and subwoofer to yes.

With a sub do set your speakers to small.

Like Fireman said, YES you will be able to watch movies and not lose any audio. You won't get the surround effect just yet, but 2-channel or 2.1-channel in your case will still be pretty terrific.

I don't want both at the same time. I knows it causes a kind of reverb. But I would like an option to choose either the TV sound or the receiver. I would like it for both the satellite TV and the video games.

I know I can do it with audio output on the TV with composite cables. But that is analog. Is there a digital way to do it?

I found my answer to question #1 in the instruction book. When plugged in HDMI to the AVR, the sound is still send to the TV speakers, but I goes through the home theater speakers by default. There is an option in the AVR menu to switch it to the TV speakers if you want (night listening for example)

I have the same AVR.

Question 1: Yes, the AVR has passthrough so that when it is in standby, the sound gets passed through to the TV.
Question 2: Yes you will be able to watch movies on a 2.1 setup. You should get great audio output depending on what the speakers are.
