Default What's your favorite UK film?

Can anyone help me compile a list of decent films that were made/set in the UK?

I'm not an expert on british cinema, my collection probably numbers only around 10 UK titles but when reacently looking for (good) UK films I was shocked to find there wern't actually many more I could think of. The amount of films made in the UK seems to have decreased dramatically in or around the 1960's, since then the majority of UK releases were mostly all of vary low quality

I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this happened, it seems there was a spate of very poor releases in the 60's and 70's namely the carry on films st Trinians etc and other dreadfull titles drove the final nail in to our industrie. Up until that point british cinema was somthing we could be proud of, and was for the most part intelectual, well written etc. . .what ever happened to all that tallent? did the industry just sell out?

Anyway If you can help me list a selection of (Good) UK titles, I'd be very greatfull, I'm trawling through the wiki lists but I have to say I don't recognise many of them.

So far I have. . (and they have to be good) I'm not really a fan of James bond, Monty Python, or pink floyd (Sorry) but . . I guess they count

Also:

The lady killers.

A Clockwork orange

Time bandits

American werewolf in london (ok, not strictly UK but. . . )

Dog soldiers

The long good friday

The italian job (meh)

V for Vendetta

Lord of the rings

The elephant man

(Some) Hammer?

Shawn of the dead

Hot Fuzz

Scum

Any others?

V for Vendetta is pretty much the best movie I've ever seen that was set in the UK, can't really think of others atm.

"The riddle of the sands" (~1979, I think). Excellent cast and movie. I'm hoping that ITV will get round to releasing this one.

Those are just the ones I know starring Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Malcolm McDowell, or were directed by Hitchcock prior to his coming to Hollywood. There are so many good movies that came from the UK (they have almost as long a history in film as Hollywood) that it would be almost impossible to put every good British movie on a list here.
