Smile Maxell to Ship 8cm Blu-ray Camcorder Media

Maxell plans to begin shipping blank 8cm BD-R and BD-RE Blu-ray media for camcorders, offering 7.5 GB of storage, or one hour of 1080 resolution video.

Quote:
Media maker Maxell announced today that it will beging shipping both BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewriteable) 8cm blank Blu-ray media for the camcorder market later this month. The discs will offer 7.5 GB of capacity, enough for approximately 60 minutes of full HD video at 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution.

"The market for HD content has significant upside, and we believe that as people see their home movies with richer texture, images and sound as a result of HD technologies available on the market, they won't turn back," said Maxell VP of sales and marketing Don Patrican, in a statement.

The release of the media is being tied to the release of Hitachi's forthcoming Blu-ray camcorders, but they won't exactly come cheap for early adopters: a single BD-R disc will go for $24.99, while a BD-RE disc wil be priced at $34.99.
