Disney Elemental 4K UHD (2023)

Pixar’s “Elemental” Digital/4K UHD/Blu-Ray/DVD Release Details Announced

Quote:
Disney has announced that the latest Pixar animated film, “Elemental”, will arrive on digital platforms, including Amazon, Apple and Vudu, to buy in the United States on August 15th 2023. The film will be released on physical formats, including 4K UHD, Blu-Ray and DVD, on September 26th 2023.

Should Disney follow a similar pattern to previous releases, we should expect to see “Elemental” available on Disney+ shortly after the physical media release, though Disney will announce this at a later date, to try to encourage more digital and physical media purchases.

Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental” is an original feature film set in Element City, where residents of Fire, Water, Earth and Air live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in. Directed by Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Partly Cloudy” short), written by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh, produced by Denise Ream (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Cars 2”), and featuring the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade.

Here’s a look at the special features:

Short Film

Carl’s Date – Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® Award winner Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins, this all-new short, “Carl’s Date,” finds Carl reluctantly agreeing to go on a date with a lady friend —but admittedly with no idea how dating works these days. Ever the helpful friend, Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends — if you’re a dog. “Carl’s Date” opened in theaters in front of Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental.”

Featurettes

Ember and Wade – Take a deeper look at the development of main characters Ember and Wade, from early designs to final effects, and learn how the complex work of the technical and character teams brought these characters to life.
Next Stop: Element City – Explore how Element City is built to accommodate its different inhabitants. Director Peter Sohn and crew members share insights about the evolution of the designed world, as well as some of the research that inspired its unique look.
Paths to Pixar: The Immigrant Experience – Hear from first-generation filmmakers on the Elemental crew as they share their journeys to Pixar. Discover how Elemental’s real-world themes of sacrifice and identity, amongst many others, reflect or diverge from their own lived experiences.

Director Peter Sohn introduces five scenes that are all illustrated, set to music, timed, and voiced, but are not included in the final version of Elemental.

Intro Ember – An alternate opening in which our hero Ember helps a newly immigrated Fire family navigate through, and acclimate to, Element City. Scene introduced by director Peter Sohn.
Mom Rejects Wade – Ember’s traditional parents learn that she’s enamored with watery Wade…and it doesn’t go well. Scene introduced by story supervisor Jason Katz.
Dante Challenge – In an attempt to keep Ember apart from Wade, Bernie tasks her with finding a place to live for newcomer Dante, who Wade finds himself rather enamored with. Scene introduced by story artist Nira Liu.
Brook Dinner – Ember joins Wade for dinner at his home, in this abandoned storyline in which Wade’s mother, Brook, is revealed to be the villain diverting water into Firetown. Scene introduced by story artist Anna Benedict.
Beach Proposal – Sharing a tender moment on the beach, Ember and Wade propose marriage to each other. Scene introduced by story artists Yung-Han Chang and Le Tang.
Audio Commentary

Elementary Filmmaker Commentary – Join director Peter Sohn, supe tech Sanjay Bakshi, supervising animator Mike Venturini, and directing animator Gwendelyn Enderoglu as they provide insight into the making of this remarkable animated feature while you watch it.

I didn't care much for this movie but my son liked it and it looked absolutely stunning, even in the non-premium theater I saw it in. The UHD should be bonkers.

Gorgeous-looking movie with a lot more on its mind than just a simple "opposites attract" love story. I didn't care for a lot of the odd behavior from Wade and his family, but I really liked it overall and I'm glad it found its legs at the box office.

This movie looked breathtakingly gorgeous in Dolby Cinema, and the 3D is also quite good - how unfortunate that there will not be a 3D blu-ray release.

But, that aside, I think it's going to look amazing in 4k!!

I'll probably go with the steelbook but double-dipping is tempting!

It seems that Disney has decided to make standard 4K editions of their films since Strange World (with the exception of MCU) exclusive to the DMC. It's a shame cause while I didn't plan to get Elemental, there's a possibility that I will want to get Wish. Not impossible, but more laborious.

Where does it say this? I've bought nearly every Disney animation/live remake UHD they've released, but those days are over if they keep making them DMC exclusives. I skipped Strange World, and since I won't buy the BD, I'll just watch them on D+ and call it a day.

There is no indication that the standard 4K release is a DMC exclusive.

That’s unfortunately what it says on Disney Movie Insiders.

Seems like they have been giving special editions to other retailers - Strange World, The Little Mermaid (2023), and Elemental all have 4K Best Buy steelbooks, TLM has a Walmart 4K with a pin, and Elemental has a Walmart 4K with a lenticular slipcover. They’re a little more expensive than a standard package 4K but at least there’s still options outside DMC.

The source for the standard package 4K being a DMC exclusive is Disney Movie Insiders.

Home release trailer:

Also nice to see that Carl’s Date is a bonus feature (doubt it’ll be on the 4K disc though unfortunately) - it’s the first Pixar short to be released on physical media since Auntie Edna (2018).

That's because it's the first Pixar movie since Incredibles 2 to be released in theaters with a short film playing before it.

If these were the price of a regular 4K, I'd bite the bullet. But steelbooks are expensive, and charging $35 for a 4K because it comes with a pin? It's an odd release strategy/trend, and I'll just stick with the digital. It's very sad.

You're right... it does say "Disney Movie Club member exclusive" on the DMI site. I guess we'll see what happens when pre-orders go live.
