Ooooo, I might have to get this.

The inclusion of the absolutely insane US cut in here is really pushing it over the edge for me. Definitely not the preferred way of viewing the film but it's such an weird cut of the film that I wish was included on older editions.

Several of their LEs have sold out in the past, but not all of them.

I know it’s a hacked version but I was disappointed when MV didn’t include it on their release. They talked about making it available for download but that never happened.

Does Umbrella charge at time of pre order? i forgot.

I dunno, on average it seems it takes 3-6 months for them to sell out.

This looks like an outstanding edition for this film. I'm tempted to pre-order it but I also have a suspicion it might come out this year as a Vinegar Syndrome partner label title. Though it would likely be missing the book, it might make sense to wait and see what the price is and get the US edition. I might spring for the import, though.

Why would it come out through as a VS partner label release? Especially since, as far as we know, Mondo Vision still has the US home video rights and Metrograph Pictures has theatrical/digital. I suppose Metrograph could have home video too, but I’d think they’d put it out through Kino by now.

I placed an order too. I figure if I wait, even if it's just a day or two, it will be gone. Just when I start paying down my credit card, I'm adding to it again.

There is a $34 edition here that just has the slipcover:

I reckon we might get a simultaneous US/UK release from MV and SS whenever it's done.
That’s good enough for me to wait for Second Sight or Mondo Vision. Thanks for the info, guys!

I think part of this calculation will also depend on whether one wants the existing director-approved 4K restoration, which was apparently only completed in SDR, or whether one wants a home video label to attempt to convert that restoration to HDR.

Pretty sure this Umbrella is gonna be the same exact transfer, just with better packaging and more English-friendly presentation all around.

The Umbrella mentions Director Approved transfer and the LCQF was not that to my understanding. The Mondo/SS were approved before he died.

That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

I would think there's only one 4K restoration and not two. And if there were two why would the French label pick the unapproved one?

I guess anything's possible though

The 2021 Umbrella Possession BD release already had this to say "this restored edition showcases Possession as the director intended." and the LCQF 4K looks exactly like the 2021 Umbrella BD, so I'd be very surprised, if the Umbrella 4K looked any different. They'd have a hard time explaining a different intended look at any rate.

Let's back it up a moment; the Mondo Vision/SS discs were from a 2k transfer/restoration approved by Zulawski before he died. LCQF's 4k release is a 4k transfer and restoration that obviously wasn't approved by him. Last I saw Mondo Vision has been working on or has already completed their own 4k restoration using Zulawski's approved transfer as reference. There's one 4k scan and two different restorations in that case similar to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre situation. We don't know if Umbrella is using the LCQF restoration or Mondo's new one (if it's done yet) but I'm assuming it'll be the former rather than latter.

Hoping Mondo Vision finally clears this up because if there's only one new master (the one they've apparently been working on) not sure why it hasn't been released in the states yet unless there's regular production stuff they haven't cleared-up after seemingly going dormant for so long.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Mondo Vision has historically had the collaboriation with FiM and David MacKenzie, which is reason enough to potentially pause.

Umbrella states:
"Umbrella presents the director approved 4K restoration of Possession on 4K UHD!"

So it's very possible if not likely that the transfer as seen on the LCQF disc is the same transfer, and it is director approved

Some may like a different color timing, but it would not be the first time people liked something other than the director's preference - and that is what I was referring to above.
