"V" Screened at Comic-Con: A Review

Quote:
It should be noted that "V" got the best response of the three pilots (followed closely by Human Target), and for good reason. The performances by the cast are universally good, and it successfully updates the premise from the '80s original, replacing the allegory to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust with many modern concerns, among them terrorism and the cause of our current financial crisis. Also separating it from the original (though how successful this will be is something that will be revealed as the show goes on) is the notion that the Visitors have been living among us for some time and that they've been undermining our society for decades.
The biggest problem with the pilot is the pacing, and it ain't because things unfold too slowly. Perhaps positioning itself as the anti-Lost in terms of not wanting to be so convoluted in its storytelling that it overwhelms the viewer, this "V" is an express train in terms of plot development. The pilot is about 43 minutes in length, and in that time we meet (oh-so-briefly) the different characters, literally setting them up in about a minute each. From there, the Visitors arrive in 29 motherships hovering over major cities of the world, their leader Anna (Morena Baccarin) addresses the world via a giant holographic image of sorts projected from the underside of the vessels, she tells us that the Visitors "are of peace, always," and for some dopey reason everyone breaks into applause on the street (didn't get it in the trailer, don't get it now), the populace instantly takes to them and starts looking at them as deities, especially when a crippled man is cured in one of their "healing centers"; we learn the Visitors are recruiting the young, discoverthey've been secretly living among us, are told that their plans are actually nefarious, and the early stages of a resistance movement is pulled together, declaring that they will fight the so-called Vs.
All in 43 minutes!
As noted earlier, those 43 minutes are pretty terrific and the cast does a nice job (a more elaborate review will be offered over the next couple of days), but there seems to be more of a need for nuance in the storytelling. Some of these things should be unfolded more slowly, or else the show can very quickly become an "us versus them" set-up that could become tiresome. Again, maybe this is being purposely designed for the audience that lives on the web, seeking and getting instant gratification. It will be interesting to see how the stories will unfold from this point forward.
All of this may sound critical, but I'll definitely "V" there, and it's recommended you do the same. -- Edward Gross

"Dead Of Night" Poster And Footage Description From Comic-Con

Quote:
Here's the description of the footage from Ryan Rotten over at Shocktillyoudrop.com..

"The footage itself looked solid, beginning with a shot of Dylan Dog - a character made famous in the popular Italian comic books of the same name - dozing off in his chair clutching a flute (a nice nod to the books). The montage that followed introduced co-stars Peter Stormare (hissing to Dylan: <"You're completely crazy to come out of retirement.") and Kurt Angle, knocking Dylan onto a slab in a meat locker. All sorts of beasties were on display. There's Taye Diggs at the vampire (a bit Buffy-esque, but with distinguished, long fangs). Tons of zombies - including a particularly funny moment that finds Hungtington waking up in a morgue and discovering what his "condition" is. And a black demon, which is said to be the main baddie in the third act. Attendees also got to see an extended scene in which Dylan is doing battle with a "super zombie," a hulking, tattooed creature.

Pretty good teaser for what appears to be a fun monster romp."

The Tron Legacy Title Treatment

Quote:
Walt Disney Pictures announced today that the Tron follow-up will be called Tron Legacy (Read the 3D Disney Panel writeup) and have provided us with the title treatment, which you can click on below for a bigger version.

The Joseph Kosinski-directed film Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett.

Tron Legacy is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that's unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant (Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. The studio is looking to release the film in November or December of 2010.

Pirates 4 Starts Shooting Spring '10!

Quote:
Comic-Con is in full swing at this point, and ComingSoon.net got a surprise interview with Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv where we talked about the genesis of some of the projects they were showing at the con, though we did have a lot of questions about future Disney plans as well. One of the movies that's still on the forefront of everyone's mind is the fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean." Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told us a few weeks back that they were working on a script, but Aviv and Disney are definitely on board as we learned when we discovered that they have plans to be rolling film on the movie as early as next year.

"We're going to shoot 'Pirates 4' in April and May of next year," Aviv told us during our interview. "We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan." He said that this time they would only be doing one movie this time that would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."

"It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger," Aviv admitted. "The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie. Still no word on whether Gore Verbinski might come back for the fourth movie.

Look for our full interview with Mr. Aviv very soon. It will definitely be of great interest to anyone who is wondering how Disney has been making decisions about some of the movies they've been making and will make in the future.

I thought it was reported a while back that Verbinski wouldn't be back for Pirates 4?

It probably shouldn't be done without him, but I'll be watching regardless if it is focused on Depp's character.
