Thanks. Good to hear your version is sharp. Okay 3D, sounds like milder 3D.

I will test the blu ray 3D out soon. I liked the look of the creature designs enough to give the film in 3D a chance along with that good deal.
The fellas I saw the film with who know Pokemon thought it was OK in terms of pokemon fanservice. I think it's built to work for people who have no knowledge of pokemon.

As a film, it's like the first X-Men movie, but with a Pokemon twist.

I'd say it's better as a movie than was BB. For a "hot take", I'd put Detective Pikachu above the Mario movie. As a movie, not as 3D as I haven't seen it yet after the controversy over in its thread.

Did you happen to check the scenes involving a car accident, a parade, or looking out of a high rise window?

While I don't recall any "sizzle scenes" in this, offhand those are where I'd expect them to be.

Thumbs up

After watching Pokemon 3D, I feel I missed out by not seeing this in theaters. As far as the film,
[Show spoiler] the cast of Reynolds as Pika is up for debate IMO. I would've preferred Pikachu's higher cartoon pitched voice over Reynolds, though he does a good job in the role he was given. The film is generally entertaining but probably not an accurate depiction of the anime series.

Pokémon : Detective Pikachu 3D Blu-ray (2019) Review:
Viewed on 100" 3D projector/great contrast/brightness settings.
3D Layering: 8/10 A consistent range of medium to high medium layers, with some strong 3D layered shots. Hardly any mild 3D.
3D Pop Outs: Not a lot, but some foreground shots pop out.
3D Framing: Nicely framed with 3D in mind for many shots. Like when Pikachu is standing on the bridge, they frame it so Pika's ears are even within frame along with his body, to not cut him off from the 3D.
Favorite 3D Shots: Mew 2 appearances tend to have stronger 3D and great 3D framing. But also when a character is hanging and looking down at the city far below. Strong 3D.
3D Summary: 8.5/10. A definite 8.5/10 and I would be tempted to give it a 9/10. This movie looks great in 3D and is a really good 3D conversion! Medium to strong 3D layering.

If this was a mild 3D film, it would at least match the mild 3D of:
I Robot 3D
Upside Down 3D
Tron Legacy 3D

This film's 3D exceeds those by a lot. It's on par with some of the better Marvel 3D conversions like maybe Iron Man 3 3D for example, (though not the strongest like Infinity War 3D).

Thanks to everyone who recommended this 3D film.

Oh for Pete's sake! You are right lol. I don't know what happened with my setup when I last looked. But I'm now 100% certain that everything is working correctly so I had another look after reading your review. The problem is that there are many 3D movies that look good even if there are issues with my configurations. I'm going to add this to a list of movies to check if I make any future changes.

I've checked out a few scenes and I didn't see anything pop-out, but it's a very nice 3D presentation overall. If you like the movie then it's definitely worth getting.

Reading this leaves me with the belief that 3D should be authored by the studio calibrating it based on the shoddiest old 1080p 3D LCD. If it works on that, it'll be amazing on everything else...most importantly, RealD projection. IMHO the "Chris Nolan" approach of studios calibrating it for the best equipment isn't working out, resulting in 3D that's as invisible as Nolan's dialogue is inaudible.

I'm thinking that I remember this film being so blurry as it was a deliberate style choice (heavy depth of field?) but if y'all don't recall that from its theatrical run then perhaps it was more the usual problem from digital cinema blowing up a 1080p image to the size of a house.

I don't know about the theatrical run, but the disc is definitely not blurry

Cool! Thanks and good to hear you were able to get another look and adjust your set up as needed. A really nice 3D conversion here! I forgot to look at who did the conversion. Maybe it's earlier in the thread but I'll look for it next time. Probably either of the top two conversion studios: SDFX Stereo D, or Prime Focus DNeg.

With my default 3D set up, it's all based on the default blu ray 3D settings, so no outside 3D enhancements or adjustments or anything.
