What do you mean by "10-bit panel" ? Do you mean a native 10-bit panel or would an 8-bit + FRC panel qualify?

When I was shopping for a LED/LCD TV, every time I looked at the panel specifications at dispayspecfications.com, the TV had an 8-bit + FRC panel. Obviously I didn't look at every possible model but I suspect that true 10-bit panels are rare or non-existent for LED/LCD TVs and only OLED TVs normally use 10-bit panels.

Sony X90L 55"; Sony A95L 55" are two examples.

This link will provide others.

8-bit + FRC panel does not equal 10bit. It downsamples 10bit to 8bit.

Not exactly. 8-bit + FRC panels use a form of dithering to fool the eye into perceiving colors that an 8-bit panel can't otherwise display. Many reviews and product descriptions for 4K LED/LCD TVs don't even make any distinction between true 10-bit panels and 8-bit +FRC panels. Both are described as 10-bit TVs. Also, to be fair, many people can't tell the difference when simply viewing video on the TV at a normal viewing distance.

The review at rtings.com for the mid-range Sony LCD/LED TV that I bought said it was a 10-bit TV. I had to go to the listing for my TV at displayspecifications.com to find out that its panel was 8-bit.+ FRC. I couldn't afford the higher-end 4K models so I didn't often look at the displayspecifications.com page for those.

Are both TVs calibrated? If not then it is hard to compare their color fidelity.

Back to your original question... I couldn't find a page for the TCL GM8 at display specifications.com to check the panel's bit depth. However it gets great reviews.

The Hisense U8K also gets great reviews. Its page at displayspecifications.com says it has an 8-bit + FRC panel.

For TV's, LED is pretty much always 8-bit + FRC. According to one particular source, there are currently 500 display panels in production - from 50-75 inches - and available for use that are designated as 10-bit panels and these are what's going into LED and OLED TVs. Unfortunately, it seems that the display panel industry no longer publishes whether or not a panel is 8-bit + FRC or true 10-bit and just labels them both as 10-bit, and you can take this to really mean that most panels are 8-bit + FRC.

Quote:
10-bit color depth 1.07 billion hues. That is what you get from 10-bit color. This can be achieved in two ways. The right way for you depends on how you use your display. True 10-bit displays have 10 bits per pixel, for 1024 shades of RGB color (Red, Green, Blue). Cube that and you get to those 1.07 billion shades. Expect smooth gradations and improved realism in photography and video content. Amazing. Beautiful. Also expensive and sometimes more than you need.

When you move down to 8-bit, you still access an impressive 16.77 million colors from 256 RGB tones produced from this tech. Will you notice a difference if you compare 8-bit to 10-bit? Yes. You will. Colors can still appear vivid and brilliant, but shading will be less fluid and gradations can appear less subtle. In an ideal world, you’d be able to access 10-bit color at an 8-bit cost. That’s where Frame Rate Control comes in.

8-bit + Frame Rate Control (FRC)
There is a way to experience all the colors of 10-bit with an 8-bit monitor. Frame Rate Control manipulates pixels so they flash two alternating colors so quickly that you perceive any of the shades in a billion color experience. Does the monitor display those billion+ colors? No. Will you be able to tell? Likely, not.

Also likely, if you work in the creative space, you have been or already are working on an 8-bit or 8-bit + FRC monitor, as this is the most common setup today.

The Exception to the Rule

While 8-bit + FRC is a stellar solution for most, there are situations that call for true 10-bit.

If you're working in a high-end Hollywood retouching studio or in retouching where individual pixels are zoomed to more than 500%, you'll probably require 10-bit. But for most of the rest of us the 8-bit + FRC monitor is adequate, accessible, and affordable.

As for quality of display, 8-bit + FRC monitors have won the prestigious TIPA Award for Best Professional Photo Monitor for the past two years. This global award from the Technical Image Press Association recognizes the world's best in photo/video innovation. Each of those winning displays was manufactured by BenQ.

Only you can decide the best monitor for your needs. Hopefully, this article leaves you better informed and empowered to make that call.

How Humans See In Color

Quote:
The visible spectrum for humans falls between ultraviolet light and red light. Scientists estimate that humans can distinguish up to 10 million colors.
https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-...s-see-in-color

Thats why 4K UHD-BD uses the same Chroma Subsampling rate as BD and yes . . . DVD: 4:2:0

Why make improvements in something no one can see?
