Default Babes In Toyland (1986 NBC TV Movie) coming from Kino

Babes in Toyland Blu-ray

Quote:
Coming November 21st!

Babes in Toyland (1986)
• Includes both the Original 1.33:1 Fullscreen and the 1.78:1 Widescreen Ratios
• Theatrical Trailer
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 96 Minutes 1.33:1/1.78:1 Rated G
Enter the magical, musical world of Toyland in this heartwarming holiday classic starring Drew Barrymore (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) and Keanu Reeves (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure)! Once a bright and cheerful community, Toyland is in great danger from the terrible Barnaby (Richard Mulligan, The Big Bus) and his scary creatures who live in the forest of the night. The only person who can save Toyland is Lisa (Barrymore), a little girl from Cincinnati who lands in Toyland on Christmas Eve. But since Lisa, a very “grown-up” little girl, doesn’t believe in toys, she needs special help from the wise but impish Toymaster (Pat Morita, The Karate Kid), the dashing and gallant Jack Nimble (Reeves) and the mother-of-many-children Mrs. Hubbard (Eileen Brennan, Clue). Together they muster an army of toy soldiers and teddy bears to drive the villainous Barnaby and his nightmare creatures out of Toyland! Wonderfully directed by Clive Donner (What’s New Pussycat?, A Christmas Carol).

It’s available in HD digitally in 1.78:1 (iTunes) and 1.33:1 (Amazon Prime) so it’s nice Kino included both aspect ratios. This is the shorter theatrical version released in Europe.

Grew up watching this every thanksgiving! Can’t wait to get copies for me and the nieces/nephews. Looks like I’ll be buying 6 copies as soon as it’s up for preorder.

I grew up watching the VHS and its always been my favorite version. I thought we'd never get this on blu-ray since it never got an official DVD release. I still feel like someone needs to pinch me because I never thought we'd see this day where its going to available to buy on blu-ray.

If you are wondering where the G rating on the VHS came from, Orion submitted it for a rating in 1991 before releasing it on VHS. Here's the entry at the MPA's film ratings website (the year after the title is when the rating was issued):

Quote:
TITLE: Babes In Toyland (1991)
RATING: G
CERTIFICATE #: 31301
REASON:
DISTRIBUTOR: Orion Home Video

I was excited to see this at first, but---this is only the short version, not the cut that originally aired on television? Disappointed--I'll pass.

Recall the same and it confused me because it looked out of place for Keanu as a kid. I never did see it. Those vhs promotions were cool, though. Seems like prices were around five each, which would be around double that now, but it seemed like a total value at the time. Still remember when combo meals were $2.99 in the early 90s.

Its funny that I had planned to watch it over on Youtube or Prime Video in December, only for Kino to come along and now give me the chance to watch it in HD quality that will (hopefully) blow all the other copies/releases (unofficial and otherwise) away.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that we're getting this on blu-ray. I never thought this would finally happen, let alone from Kino of all labels. Its going to be a day one for me. The pre-order for it can't be available soon enough!

The original TV broadcast was 145 minutes long (and aired in a 3 hour slot as shown in that TV guide pic above)!

While they can't help that MGM only has this "shorter cut" available, that's an awful lot of material edited out of this version.

MGM's HD master is the shorter version and that version is the only version that has ever been released on home video. Why? Maybe Orion only had the rights to the shorter theatrical version?

Here's the poster and lobby cards for the German theatrical release on December 17, 1987, under the title "Abenteuer im Spielzeugland":

I'm guessing it got a German theatrical release because it was shot in Germany.

I wish they could have included the longer cut as an extra at least, even in SD.

Yeah I never expected it to get released on blu-ray because it was a Christmas TV movie. But that didn't stop me from requesting Kino release it and mentioning it on the forum whenever I got a chance:

I bought it when iTunes added it in HD earlier this year. It's the European theatrical version (95 minutes) and it is cropped to 1.85:1. The version on Amazon Prime last Christmas was in the correct aspect ratio (4:3) and in HD but it too was the European theatrical version and it was not purchasable. It is not currently available for viewing on Amazon Prime.

The 1.33:1 HD version has showed up Amazon Prime every Christmas since 2018. It should be back on Amazon Prime this year no later than the beginning of November (I think last year it was added around October). It will be at this URL:

Off topic but for those looking for Crash Course, it shows up on a regular basis in SD on MGM's ScreenPix Amazon channel and is currently on Amazon Prime:
