I would try Craigslist first. Maybe you can find something local.

God knows how the TV has been looked after. Might work but for how long. Buying second hand electrics is a nightmare, go find a shop that has a good policy on guaranteeing it or returning it. Pay a little more but for peace of mind, it is worth it.

If you go Ebay, make sure the seller is willing to take it back if you are not satisfied.

I bought a LCD from eBay for the bedroom about 2 years ago and have not had any problems with it. It was new and came in it's original box. Just make sure you pay with PayPal and check the seller's feedback.

I'm kind of surprised about the anti-eBay sentiment in this thread so far. It almost seems like some of the responses are a little uneducated. There are plenty of eBay sellers who sell new merchandise and have return policies just like any online retail store. Many times, a seller's eBay store or profile will be a secondary method of advertising their product; a lot of the time they have an actual website and simply duplicate their product, services, and/or warranty policies on an eBay store. The same thing goes for Amazon. Not that I have any reason to defend eBay or Amazon; it's just that they're legit places to buy new gear so I wouldn't necessarily worry about buying from eBay "just because it's eBay" if you're following that.

The only difference with buying on eBay versus buying through an online store is it is (somewhat) mediated by the eBay regulations; in addition to that you often have the option to bid on an item. In some senses, it might actually be better to buy a TV from eBay than your typical online retail store, as you might have more avenues for counteraction if something goes wrong: eBay policies, PayPal, etc.

That said, I would be a little skeptical of buying a TV from any online retailer, be it eBay-based or standard online retail store. There's really no other reason than I simply don't trust making such large purchases online. The largest purchase I've ever made online was for the receiver in my signature, which was like $400-something. I was nervous as all heck between the time I submitted the payment until I received it. All was well, though.

IMO, FWIW, YMMV
