Default Dollhouse BD Trouble

Hello. I rented from Netflix Dollhouse season 1. I have the Samsung BD-P1500. I watched the 1st disc, had no trouble with it. I pop in disc 2, it loads like disc 1 did, I go to play all, it just repeats the menu over and over. I go to play a single episode, I click on the episode and it loads like it's about to play the episode and then stays on black, the numbers on the player are all at 0, nothing is happening, I press stop it stops, so it hasn't frozen. I put in disc 3 and the same problem happens however when I go to special features it will play the supplemental material as well as the un-aired pilot. I last updated the firmware on April 18 2009 and I believe that was 2.4. I went on samsung's website and there is no firmware update so it can't be the firmware, do you suppose that discs 2 and 3 are just bad? Thank you.

If the first disc played without having the same problems as disc 2 and 3,my assumption would be it has to be the discs.

I would think all the discs were pressed using the same coding so there should be NO difference in Disc 1 or Disc 3.Sounds like you have a problem with the discs you received.

Especially since there is another DollHouse Thread here and no one is reporting a problem just like yours.
So I wouldnt be alarmed(If none of the discs played I would be worried).

I am also saying it is a disc issue. Have Netflix send you new copies and see if it makes any difference.

Default me too

I also have this problem.

I have an Oppo BDP-83 with the latest firmware update and I only rented the 3rd Disc as I have seen the season but not the 13th episode or xtras.

The disc loads, runs through all the 7 second screens for Interpol and such, then a 10 second Fox one that it just freezes on at the 10 second mark.

Never even gets to the Menu, and any button but power either does nothing or gives the NOT symbol.

Was just looking to see that I wasn't the only one and sure enough, looks like this is an Issue.

I'll report the Disc and request another, with several people doing this I'm sure it will get back to Fox or at least to Netflix if this is somehow their issue, though it seems unlikely as the disc I have isn't one of the Grey "we burned 2 million for Netflix" looking discs.

Thanks for posting this, helps to know.

I've only watched "Epitaph One" on my BD-P1500, but that played just fine with no problems; I'm running the 2.4 firmware as well, so I'm pretty sure that the problem is your discs.

I've watched the first two discs with no problems. I use a Panasonic BDMP60 and it also works on my BDMP30. Could be a firmware issue that has not yet been addressed.

Default Dollhouse Blu-ray problems

I bought DOLLHOUSE SEASON 1 from Amazon. Discs 1, 2, and 3 do not play in my Oppo BDP-83. The introductory warnings play but then it locks up and the player has to be powered off then on to eject the disc. Disc 1 performs the same way in my Sony PS-3. Discs 2 and 3 appear to play in the PS-3, that is I get past the introductory disclaimers to the menu and the first episode begins to play. Is there a known problem with this disc set?

I tried playing Disc 1 on my computer with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre Platinum and I get a Warning message stating that "Your Blu-ray Player requires an update in order to play this disc." I have the latest version of the software installed. I have yet to try it on the Oppo, but being that this set was released by Fox it wouldn't surprise me if they changed keys once again. They had plenty of time to perpare this set so you would think if they're going to do this they would atleast coordinated with the manufacturers.

EDIT: The discs play fine on Corel's WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray. Then again Corel released an update toward the beginning of July.

Do you have the beta firmware installed on your machine? I'm wondering if this addresses the problem since I see Oppo list "Blu-ray Disc compatibility improvement, especially for certain titles such as "12 Rounds" and "The Haunting in Connecticut". 12 Rounds is another Fox title that was recently released less than 30 days before Dollhouse.

Default latest

I'll reply to that, I didn't have the latest firmware on my Oppo since everything was playing til Dollhouse, but then I went an got the latest firmware update just to be sure.

Info on the update:

Release date: Initially released on June 26, 2009 as a public beta test version.
Promoted to official release version on July 21, 2009.
Category: Latest Official Release

Main Version: BDP83-31-0620
Loader Version: BE2403 85752403
Sub Version: MCU83-23-0513

This is the firmware version I loaded and that Dollhouse Disc 3 was still unresponsive on.

As of Aug 2nd it's the latest firmware you can get for this unit.

Thanks. However, Oppo has a new beta firmware:

Release date: July 24, 2009.
Category: Public Beta Release

Main Version: BDP83-34-0722
Loader Version: BE2403 85752403
Sub Version: MCU83-23-0513

Release Notes:

Based on the previous official release version BDP83-31-0620, the major changes included in this version are:
  1. Blu-ray Disc compatibility improvement, especially for certain titles such as "12 Rounds" and "The Haunting in Connecticut".
  2. Additional "Deep Color" options utilizing dithering. If the display does not support 36-bit deep color, dithering 36-bit to 30-bit or 24-bit may produce an image that is visually smoother than rounding 36-bit to 30- or 24-bit.
  3. Improved precision for color space conversion.
  4. Improved upconversion for MKV files that have a picture size smaller than 1280x720 with 24fps frame rate.
  5. Improvement for DVD navigation.
  6. Other general disc compatibility and performance improvements.

You can get the beta but you have to download it and manually install the firmware. Oppo doesn't make the beta firmware available via ethernet updates.

Well, that's strange, I never saw that version on the site when I went there, and I went that after the 24th of July, and today when I go there, it's still not there, but there is this one:

Release date: August 5, 2009. This version is an experimental version.
Category: Experimental Release

Main Version: BDP83-36-0805
Loader Version: BE2403 85752403
Sub Version: MCU83-23-0513

Comparing to the latest official release version BDP83-31-0620, the major changes included in this version are:

1. Blu-ray Disc compatibility improvement, especially for certain titles such as "Dollhouse Season 1", "12 Rounds" and "The Haunting in Connecticut".
4. Improved up-conversion for MKV files that have a picture size smaller than 1280x720 with 24fps frame rate.
5. Improvement for DVD navigation.
6. Fix for the issue of not being able to reset factory default settings introduced in the 34-0722 beta firmware.
7. Fix for the PAL DVD picture quality issue introduced in the 34-0722 beta firmware. The issue looks like a de-interlacing error but is caused by the decoder chip, not the de-interlacer.
8. New pop-up user interface for audio and subtitle selection.
9. Improved GOTO function for music file playback. The GOTO function now allows the user to jump to a certain time point within a music file.
10. Other general disc compatibility and performance improvements.

So I will load this in a bit later and see how Dollhouse Disc 3 plays as I have a replacement from Netflix now.

Rdodolak, Where on the Oppo site did you see that Beta? I didn't see it under the support tab when I was there Aug 1st etc.

The new experimental release was posted on their website yesterday. You can still download the previous beta release via the following link:

Default Worked

I went with the 805 version.

It worked just fine.

So it certainly does look like it was just a update issue, at least for the Oppo.

Thanks for the posts and replies people.

Glad to see the 0805 version fixed the problem, but to answer your question it was on the support page right after/under the official firmware listing (e.g. where the new experimental firmware is listed). The previous beta was there as of 7/25 and was still there until 8/5. At least it's always shown up for me on that page.

I have a BD-P1500 - and it came with the original firmware on the box.

I could not play Epitaph One on disc 3 (I'd only tried that one episode on the disc) and got rather frustrated.

A friend of mine pointed me towards trying to update the firmware, and I just grabbed the most recent update from Samsung's website and slapped it onto a USB stick and followed the instructions.

Everything went smoothly, and I was able to watch the episode on the disc.

I just got this working about an hour ago, so I've not had much more time to test things out. If I do not add to this thread it means the firmware update did the trick!
