That website is blocked at my work for some reason. Can you cut and paste, or summarize it for me?

Seems Sony can jam another feather in its cap and cluck about another award today. The winners were announced for this year's EISA awards (European Imaging and Sounds Association) and the PlayStation 3 walked off with the award for best multimedia device. From the official announcement on the EISA site, "Sony's PS3 is a wonderful example of a powerful media centre, thanks to its inclusion of an audio-video-photo player as well as a web browser to navigate, download, play and chat on the Internet. In addition there's a 60GB hard disk for content storage, plus Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and four USB interfaces allowing connection of external hard-disk storage and USB accessories such as keyboards."

They continue to gush about the importance of Blu-ray and how, above all else, the system is a "worthy heir to the grand PlayStation heritage." We're glad that, for once, the PS3 isn't rated an over-priced piece of hardware or a product that has already failed. We'd like to think that the opinion of the EISA is the least biased and a lot more convincing than one Japanese author, or a single journalist. We're happy for you, Sony, just don't forget that you've got to make the PS3 a gaming console above all that other useful stuff!

I have to be honest and say initially I had thought the machine was a bit too expensive for my taste, but after taking the leap and purchasing the console, I think the investment was more than worth the price of admission. My Blu-Ray library is growing rapidly and although I have only one video game for th system, that will be changing this holiday season as well as in the coming year.

Yo Ice, I've tried to stream media to my PS3 through my wifi, but winXP doesn't seem to want to "talk" to my PS3 to share files (PS3 does not show up in Media Player when I tell it to "share"). Any ideas, or is your Media Server a standalone (non-PC) unit?

Have you tried using Nero and removing your PC firewall?

Step one:
Dump Media Player

Step two:
Remove your cludge of installed codecs

Step three:
Download and install CCCP (combined comunity codec pack)

Step four:
Download and install TVersity

Supposedly you can get it to transcode and stream in real time... I have gotten it to transcode and stream AVIs, but I get corrupt data errors for large MKVs, so I transcode them to MPEG2 separately, and stream the MPG file... Its amazing what you can find from off air HD programming as MKV files which isn't available on EITHER HDM format yet

I have had an Xbox 360 and now have a PS3. I also had for 5 days a Nintendo Wii. i must say, when I unpacked my PS3, it's the only system ever, where I have thought, wow, this feels expensive. Both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, just look like ordinary consoles, but you just know, that under the PS3 bonnet, is alot of power, just bursting to be unleashed. I am glad I bought my PS3, even though it cost 500 quid (console, 3 games and extra controller).

- haven't tried Nero yet, I'm not REAL technically proficient. Do alot of you guys use Nero as your Media Player?

- Dump, as in uninstall, WMP? I'm curious how I transfer all of the CDs I ripped to another media program.
- remove installed codecs? again i'm not real proficient w/this stuff, but I'm willing to learn - any examples I should look for?
- I'll research the other progs. you mentioned.

I plan to get a PSP sometime soon ($$$ willing), how do you guys figure these alternate options will work w/streaming to that?

- if you know of any websites that have good tutorials/forums re: this topics, point me at 'em.........

No, don't dump as in remove, just stop using When you install CCCP it will give you the option of using WMP classic as your mkv player... if you don't know what an mkv is, trust me, you will

I have nero 7, and I tried nero media server... I didn't like it, besides it DOES NOT TRANSCODE JACK!

TVersity is free, and pretty easy to use

On the CCCP website, there is a program called "insurgent" which searches for installed codecs... from what I have read, some of the problems people have with codecs is when multiple programs try to install multiple versions... Insurgent will tell you what you have installed.

For transcoding I use video9 from red kawa. For smaller files, say a 720p capture of an hour long tv show, you can actually transcode it down to 700m MP4 file, and play from a usb drive, a memory card, or even burn it to a CD-R data disc.

There are forums at the redkawa site, the tversity site, and a pretty good tutorial over on the ps3 formums

The PS3 is a finely tuned machine , way to advanced for the xbox 360 M$ boys ,they can drop there price to 1.00$ that does not mean it will not have a failure !

I checked out TVersity, I might try that out - I think what i've been doing mucking about w/WMP is trying to figure out what crap is running on my machine and get it out of the way of WMP sharing w/the PS3 - kinda like trying to get a jealous girlfriend (windows) to share w/a much hotter mistress (PS3 ) - initially she won't be too cooperative about it!

Haha. I had a Wii for about a month. It is really not as good as people make it out to be. Wii sports is really fun at first, but there isn't much in the way of games besides that. It definitely didn't entertain me for very long.
