I really like that cover. Seems to be SDR? I’ll still grab it though!

They should have licensed the Johnnie To interview from the French DVD released by HK Video. It's in English and he dishes on Maggie

There's also the on-set visit from 1993:

It's licensed from Media Asia so it will probably be similar to Carlotta's 4K UHD:

Welp, it looks like the Criterion list is already filling up for next year. Very surprised this didn't become a simple blu-ray only release. Reasonable price point since it's two movies and an easy purchase for me. Some freaking fantastic news today.

Great news. Would love it if Criterion were to release The Election films next.

Surprised there aren't any commentaries for this release since nearly every other HK movie release has one

Criterion doesn't like recording new commentaries anymore and usually sticks to producing one or two short 10-20 minute interviews/video essays for their releases nowadays. Which kinda stinks because you know another label would put out a release stacked with commentaries and extras.

Interesting to see this get a 4K release since they've elected to release other 4K restorations of HK films on Blu-ray only. I'm a bit wary though since about half of these restorations from L’Immagine Ritrovata have been scrubbed of grain.

Let’s hope the compression is up to par, unlike Walkabout.

Two of the films on the new Jackie Chan Emergence of a Superstar box-set has commentaries by Frank Djeng. I wonder if those were recorded for another label and then ported over or were they recorded exclusively for Criterion. If it is the latter, then that makes the absence of commentaries for this release more disappointing.

Perfectly good films but quite a puzzling decision given the wealth of (far) superior martial arts/HK cinema out there. I hope this first foray leads to plenty more.

I believe he commented somewhere that he had to beg them to do those commentaries. He's worked on some of the English subtitles for Criterion (and confirmed he worked on this release as well) so it's a shame they just don't have him record commentaries while he's at it.

I am so happy right now. There's nothin quite like the Heroic Trio. And Michelle and Maggie in the same movie is just heaven for me. <3

Neither did I until someone gave me some trivia about an anime show I was watching. R.O.D.The TV features three sisters who were named after the actors in these movies. Anita, Michelle and Maggie.

This is great news but goddamn it I want Mr. Vampire 1/2 and Spooky Encounters on UHD. Not to mention Dreadnaught and Magnificent Butcher. Don't make me wait until I'm dead!

I'm 100% sure that some people never read the international 4K sub-forum. This was already released in June in France. Yet, some people are surprised about this release.
