The feature length documentary on the All the Haunts be Ours ; Woodlands Dark Days Bewitched call this & Michael Reeves’ Witchfinder General & Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man as the folk horror vanguard.

I’m sure that M Shite Myamalan had his magpie eyes on this when making his cop-out travesty, twist for the sake of it, The Village.

The NSM release is probably the worst 4K release in my collection. Just dreadful. Glad to see it is getting another go.

Gonna hold out for US release. Haven't most 88 Films 4Ks been dreadful?

No.

Teething troubles, but when they've been good, they've been superb. The problematic ones are already fixed or are landing imminently.

They're certainly putting out better discs than Shout where it's quantity over quality, and Shout, BU and others just brush any issues under the carpet.

88 have very much placed themselves as the new Arrow, where they release this genre stuff Arrow release less frequently now as well as earning a certain level of trust that Arrow themselves have lost.

88 Films 4K releases are also rather competitively priced. No hardboxes of tat, but a slipcover, poster and a fiver cheaper.

Don't generalize over a few examples. The vast majority of SF releases have been excellent.

Hmm, if you say so.

It's a matter of trust. I see a large percentage of crappy encodes and baffling decisions when it comes to which cut to give the 4K treatment. Criticism is ignored. Any number of US boutique labels seem to have this (baffling to me) customer is always wrong attitude.

88 have released a couple of discs with screw ups, but I trust them more and not less as a result because of the way they eventually responded in such a positive way. In typical forum fashion, people moaned about petty things like shipping emails, whereas the US labels that don't even fix discs get the usual praise.

They may well be, but SF are infamous for the dreadful state a significant proportion of their discs go out in. I got so sick of having to return them that I just don't buy anything they put out any more, it's like they don't exist.

88 have been sterling in dealing with issues, a lesser label would not be issuing replacement discs for House on the Edge of the Park.

A lesser label would have left the purple blood on Hell of the Living Dead too, judging by the number of discs out there encoded in the wrong colourspace that labels have refused to even acknowledge. Or if they were Kino-like, come up with some lame excuse that the master was supposed to look like that.

The scratched disc issues are beyond their control though. Kino, Criterion, Radiance, and even big studios are having to deal with the same thing. If there was another NA factory besides the one in Mexico, everyone would use it, but unfortunately there isn't, so we have to put up with their terrible quality control. The alternative, if it's even possible, would be to shift manufacturing to Europe, but the costs and transit times would likely make that unrealistic.

They appear to be complacent about it though. It's giving them a real knock to trust levels, so surely it's worth risking it by taking a harder line with the plant and rejecting discs? Otherwise it becomes a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy where lower sales mean they can't justify fixes and stuff.

The UK based labels not only have more regular access to a better plant, but are more proactive in addressing scratched discs. You mention Radiance yourself, they're one that have had this issue but unless I am misremembering, have said something about it.

Shout have addressed it a couple times. I'd have to look for the post, but an Insider said they've been working hard with the factory to address the issue. It's obviously very frustrating for the label as well. As for Radiance, they replied to someone on Twitter and told them to reach out to Lime Wood for a replacement, and also mentioned the issue being beyond their control too.

I get the frustration and notoriety that SF have received because of it, so I don't really blame anyone, especially those that are in the UK to be hesitant when ordering titles.

edit: Found what I was referring to

As always, if you receive a damaged disc, just email us and we'll do our best to assist.

Well, I will certainly review my opinion should they earn it.

As exciting as it is for this film to be on 4K, I think I'm even more interested that this is part of a "Tigon Collection" in 4K.

Actually they have all been superb, except two (which were the first two many experienced), but they fixed those two and since then all has been stellar / above typical severin 4K quality
