United Kingdom All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) Blu-ray Feb/2012

All Quiet on the Western Front Blu-ray

Delbert Mann's made for TV All Quiet on the Western Front (1979) has received a preliminary release date: October 12. Courtesy of ITV Granada. Golden Globe Winner: Best Motion Picture Made for TV (1980).

Matchflick:
Quote:
One of the greatest anti-war movies ever made, based upon one of the greatest anti-war novels ever written, All Quiet On The Western Front is the story of a group of young German soldiers who enlist to fight in World War One at the urgings of their parents and teachers, none of whom have the faintest idea what it is the boys will face.

The film unfolds through the eyes of Paul Baumer (Richard Thomas) a dreamer and a thinker, as he and his friends are introduced to the realities of trench warfare by the wily Kat (Ernest Borgnine, in one of his best roles). Their ideals and naive ideas of war are quickly stripped away by the mud, the gas, the bullets, and the rats. The horrors of disease and primitive medicines take their toll and Thomas's narration documents how war changes a man irrevocably, and how the suffering and the dying is always carried out by the men on the ground.

While the film has dated in terms of effects and direction techniques, it retains all of its power- scenes like Kemmerich in the hospital, or Baumer's vicious hand-to-hand combat with a French soldier in a foxhole and its aftermath speak volumes about the nature of war and of being a soldier.

A sad movie, a smart movie, and an important movie, All Quiet On The Western Front is cinema at its finest.

I've yet to see this '79 version? Is it a good film? Regardless, nice to see it get a Blu-ray release. It really seems distributors are beginning to let the flood gates open, which is a great thing!

Default John Boy version ok, but...

Any word on when 1930 version is coming out on Blu? One of my three all-time favorites.

I think it is an excellent film. I saw this when I was 12 or so and it had quite an impact on me. I've seen the original one too, they both have their strong points.

I would not hesitate to pick this up, I definitely will!

I have it on LD. I didn't go HD until last summer, so I'm in the process of replacing my few DVDs and more LDs with Blu. My LD of the 30s version has a lot crackle and pop, and my player is broken, so they can't come out with a Blue soon enough for me.

Is the 1979 Blu-ray version region-free? I can't find any information on that.

I was able to access the menu, feature film and supplementary material on both a Region A PS3 and a Region Free modified Oppo BDP-80.

Still amazed that the made for TV version has been out for 2 years, but not in the US, and no news on when the classic 1930 version is coming out.

Strange, looks like the new thread (for 1930 film) has been merged with previous thread (for 1979 film).

Some steelbook threads have been merged into this forum too. An overzealous mod would be to blame here I think.

Any word on whether the 1930 version is region free? Also looks like the 1979 version is on sale, it was a good movie, not great like the original
