From the opening to end of Tron: Legacy to Oblivion, now Top Gun: Maverick - and a few other titles he is a great visual story teller, which is what Zack Snyder is labeled as a lot, thing is Joseph Kosinski is better, by a long shot to me. Now with that said minus Top Gun , things like Tron Top Gun just had everything - the budget to boot too. And Oblivion/Tron are not only visually stunning but have decent to really good scripts.More so than Snyders, but gosh has and does he do well with completing stories fairly well , visually first, then with a pretty solid script(S). (talking about Joseph Kosinski not Snyder).
Its a shame Tom Cruise was in two of these projects because Kosinski gets basically zero credit in the media. Like Spielberg saying Tom Cruise saved cinema - true last year, however about the director? No credit? Ah - well. Plus he was the one who suggested Connelly for Maverick after working with her previously, big and good decision. Probably her best role - and work ethic in quite some time. His supporting cast is always fair - to really good. He got a good performance out of Olivia Wilde and a leading - good performance out of Morgan Freeman who basically stands in front of cameras as of the last 15 years (Tho Nolan got him to work). All this said, the man deserves respect. ![]() I might add one last thing, the scores in his films are always really good too. But few praised. |

Snyder hasn't made THAT many, but his like a god on the internet. Cameron (my fav director) hasn't either and basically a universal box office dart for success. So I think the films he has made should credit him as good if not really good.

James Cameron hasn't made a lot of movies, but his films are usually blockbuster hits.
James Cameron: 1982 Piranha II: The Spawning Saturn International Pictures / Columbia Pictures 1984 The Terminator Orion Pictures 1986 Aliens 20th Century Fox 1989 The Abyss 1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day TriStar Pictures 1994 True Lies 20th Century Fox / Universal Pictures 1997 Titanic Paramount Pictures / 20th Century Fox 2009 Avatar 20th Century Fox 2022 Avatar: The Way of Water Joe Kosinski 2010 Tron: Legacy 2013 Oblivion 2017 Only the Brave 2022 Top Gun: Maverick Spiderhead TBA Untitled film I'm going to guess his TBA (To Be Announced film) is Tron 3. He said he wanted to direct the sequel back in 2010. I've only seen Tron 2, Oblivion and Top Gun 2. Each nicely done IMO. |

Top Gun: Maverick is obviously Kosinki's masterpiece. I enjoyed Tron: Legacy, Oblivion and Only the Brave too. |

I object that this director is a great visual storyteller as his 3D for Tron Legacy was so mild it is still debated whether it is even 3D at all, and his Oblivion appeared to be made for 3D yet did not release in that format.
Seeing scenes so obviously made for stereoscopic depth in 2D suggest a director who is, ahem, oblivious to visual direction. |

Maverick is his only great movie. Tron and Oblivion are serviceable, but cold, unfeeling, and sterile. He can be a great visualist and I appreciate his penchant for wide shots and clear geography in his lensing, especially during action sequences, but I don't feel any personality in his films. When I watch a good director's films, I feel like I learn about the director - their taste, eccentricities, hopes, fears, etc. Maverick feels like Cruise might as well have directed it.
Snyder, like him or not, is an auteur, and you definitely feel his influences in every beat of his films. He's laying his artistic soul bare on-screen. He's fearless and you have to appreciate that, whether you enjoy his films or not. Last edited by CreasyBear; 12-12-2023 at 02:53 PM. |

Snyder IMO started off with a bang as I loved 300 & Dawn of the Dead. Cant get into any of his other stuff. The DC films are all crap. Watchmen tries hard but just doesnt work. |

Snyder isn't great but when you see it, you know it's a Snyder film. Top Gun: Maverick was a massive success but that film felt like a Cruise/McQuarrie film before a Kosinski film. Like others have said, if Snyder made it it would feel like a Snyder film. Maverick was a success because of how old-fashioned it was, with hints of Scott's style...
Spiderhead is more indicative of his career. Big sci-fi concept, big stars... but feels low on energy and pop. |

Snyder is excellent at slow motion, fight scenes and action scenes IMO. I can usually see the impact he made on the film industry after Watchmen and 300. I hope Rebel Moon is in theaters for awhile to be able to see it, being Netflix bound I think.
Zach Snyder Films: 2004 Dawn of the Dead 2007 300 2009 Watchmen 2010 Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole 2011 Sucker Punch 2013 Man of Steel 2016 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2017 Justice League 2021 Zack Snyder's Justice League Army of the Dead 2023 Rebel Moon |

Tron: Legacy is cool. Absolutely. But it's def a thinner film. But he did bring that world back into the zeitgeist. And he helped get Daft Punk to craft a bomber score.
Oblivion was just fine. Nothing special. I would have liked to see the comic of it first. He should publish that. Also Olga Kurylenko < Andrea Riseborough. Don't agree with Cruise's pick on that. Only the Brave is underrated and shockingly good. And it's obvious he took that energy and put it intoTop Gun: Maverick, which is a perfectly great film nothing else. That film gets a lot of praise for being just a fun ride but nothing else. Spiderhead I've yet to see due to it looking closer to his Oblivion efforts. His F1 film could be rad if he keeps trying to emulate Tony Scott. Something that he gives me vibes of but on a bigger budget yet less intensity and heart (maybe with the exception of Only the Brave). |

The score to Tron Legacy, great IMO. Amazing film visually. I'd have to see Only the Brave and Spiderhead. I don't remember spotting Spiderhead in theaters. Okay, I see it was direct to Netflix. He seems to cast Miles Teller in his films lately. |

Snyder has always felt like a frat boy. Like a beer chugging dick who shoots films. I wouldn't be surprised to find out he directed Woodstock '99. Not the documentary, the actual Woodstock '99.
