I'm looking to upgrade my receiver for gaming and movie-watching via current-gen consoles (Xbox Series X, PS5 later). Is there anything better than the Onkyo TX-NR6100?
Key capabilities that matter are 1. 4k @ 120Hz passthrough 2. Atmos/presence sound support 3. HDMI CEC and device-switching that actually works (e.g. turning off the TV turns off the receiver, which turns of the console) I'd like to find something under $750 (USD) if possible (the Onkyo is currently $550). Any experiences, alternatives, or recommendations would be appreciated. |

https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-S76...8e6d374b3&th=1 It is almost $100 less ($448 on Amazon), but it has a little less power (75w vs 100w). However, the Denon does offer a bit more with the sound processing, as it has Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume which helps with frequency response and surround volume levels. Other than that, they both have 4K@120hz and Dolby Atmos. Not sure about the HDMI CEC with the Denon. |

I ended up going with the Yamaha RX-V6A a few weeks ago. It's been solid after a bit of a learning curve and tweaking. It checks all of my boxes in the OP, though I ended up running my XSX from through my TV (LG C1) rather than utilizing the receiver's passthrough. I did test the passthrough regardless, and results were good even at 4k @ 120Hz + Atmos audio (with Exoprimal, which is one of the few games that does EVERYTHING).

A few months too late now, but the Onkyo TX-NR7100 can now be had for under $700 on Amazon. I've been holding out for a deal on the RZ50 but admittedly that model would be overkill for what I plan to use it for and so the 7100 seems very appealing at the moment.
