I'm going to see this restoration in theaters this weekend and have definitely joked that we're disrespecting Kubrick haha. Film history is meant to be preserved and studied, so don't feel like you're actually disrespecting him by seeing it. If anything, it's disrespectful to not complete his filmography 🤘.

I saw a screening of the new 4K extended cut. As expected, the audience wasn't impressed and didn't applaud. The new cut is a little more cohesive and less confusing but the film is still atrocious. Most of the new footage is in the first half of the film and I was surprised that there were quite a few prolonged scenes. That's all the detail I'll go into.

Bottom line, if you plan on watching Fear and Desire again or for the first time, get this new 4K edition. It's not fully restored but it does occasionally look really impressive and far better than the blu ray.

I doubt it, the Kino-Lorber information clearly indicates a scan from an original 35-mm print, so I expect the 4K to feature the 12m 35s 'Kubrick' version NOT the expanded 'This is America' RKO version.

Couldn't ask for more than this. And given how well their last three Kubrick 4ks have turned out, I am very excited for this one.

Does anyone know if its confirmed the short films will be in 4K? If so, I think its awesome Kino is giving us his short films in 4K instead of just giving the old HD restorations.

The special feature descriptions are the same for the 4K and Blu-ray, so there's no clear definition if the 4K disc has the short films in 4K (even if no Dolby/HDR). It just says they're from new 4K restorations, but again, the description is the same on the Blu-ray's description.

It would be silly to include each short film twice in HD in a 4K+Blu-ray combo pack. Universal always includes the same bonus features on the 4K and HD Blu-ray, but the 4K disc always has them in 4K resolution, so I imagine Kino would do something similar?

It also uses the exact same phrasing to describe the actual feature film itself, so though I agree it’s vague, I take it to mean the short films will be in true 2160p on the 4K disc.

Agreed. Plus the previous restoration of these were finished in a 1080p HD restoration for the Eureka release. I doubt that Kino would bother with new 4K restorations for the shorts unless they planned to include them in 4K. Otherwise the previous restorations would have been just fine.

This is my least favorite Kubrick, but I welcome it into my collection. I could definitely use a re-evaluation of it, and the extras will make it worth it as well.

Pre-order up at Amazon US and for those in Europe if you would like a reliable local retailer, iMusic in Denmark are very decent for imports and I have had no issues with them at all. Be aware though that orders under €100 have €6 shipping and all orders are shipped together when the last item is available when ordering multiple items together.

Yay, Target shipped my pre-order this morning. Hopefully 4Ks of Barry Lyndon & Eyes Wide Shut are coming out sometime this year or next.

[Show spoiler]I don't know if Lolita will ever get a 4K, though, lol.

I would love to be able to own his entire filmography on 4K.

We're so damn close at this point.

My Target order arrived today. But unlike most of my recent Kino 4K purchases with them, this one arrived without loose discs.

My copy arrived today.

All titles have Dolby Vision and as hoped (expected), the shorter works are all in 4k, not just from a 4K scan. Not had a chance to look at Fear and Desire yet but to my eyes the Seafarers looked very decent.

We now have those 3 early docs in 4K, and Lolita, Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut remain unreleased in 4K which speaks volumes to the leadership at WB right now.

It's possible that this shouldn't be considered disrespecting his wishes. He did not want us to see the the shorter 61 minute cut that was unearthed in the 90s. Who's to say he didn't want us to see the full 70 minute original version that he made? But it didn't exist in his lifetime (after 1953).

Anyway, I quite liked the 70 minute cut. It was fascinating and much more interesting than the 61 minute cut, which is a rote and rather boring low-budget take on a standard war film. The more philosophical and metaphysical version that I watched on 4K UHD today was really, really interesting. A very entertaining and thought-provoking movie I thought!

Sidney's (Paul Mizursky's) descent into madness was much more fleshed out as well, and his performance more appreciated by me in this version.

The transfer looks amazing as well. It's not a perfect looking movie with signs of some amateurishness in the photography, some cheap equipment, some poorly stored elements, but the shots that looks great look AMAZING.

Mine had a loose 4K disc (1080 disc not loose). I was worried, but watched it today and it played flawlessly.
