OMG this is sensational news - FiM / David M encodes incoming. Can’t wait. Would love to have The Mother and… on 4K but I don’t expect one from Carlotta and Criterion.

Looks, like just about everything he made has had the 4K restoration treatment. I wonder how many will make the box set. Maybe all of them.

I expect that all the films mentioned here will be included in the box set:

This was shot on 16mm, so I’m not sure an UHD would be a big improvement.

This is an endless debate brought up every now and then so I’ll try to make this as dense as possible: I’m not sure if you have any UHDs of 16mm-shot films in your collection, such as Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and many more, but the general answer to your question couldn’t be a bigger YES. I’m speaking of experience, in case you’re wondering. Maybe you’re just referring to an upgrade in native resolution from HD to 4K and whether that’s worth it for 16mm film. A big yes to that as well. And even if not, even if a film is that old and shot under difficult circumstances that rendered the native amount of image detail on the negative less than 4K, the UHD format alone allows you to preserve the full native color gamut via HDR or even SDR BT.2020 and obviously significantly better encoding of the feature with "tighter" grain (this would be guaranteed for the Eustache films as either FiM or LSP handle UHD encodings for Carlotta). Such an example would be the French UHD of The Rules of the Game, a 35mm-shot film that doesn’t have the depth and resolution of 4K video but looks stunning on UHD and better than the BDs due to all the above.

Given how long Mother and The ***** has been unavailable for home viewing in general I think worrying about it getting a 4K as opposed to “only” a Blu-ray is somewhat of a superfluous concern frankly.

Fairly certain that Criterion will bring out the English friendly set soon.

In April there's a Eustache collection on the Criterion Channel:

Quote:
The Dirty Stories of Jean Eustache

One of the most revered yet enigmatic figures to emerge in the wake of the French New Wave, Jean Eustache left behind a handful of unsentimental yet compassionate films that continue to be rediscovered and embraced by new generations of cinephiles. With a string of early shorts, he developed the rigorous visual style and themes—the bewildering complexities of romance and the obliviousness of awkward young men chasing it—that led to his magnum opus The Mother and the *****, an epic, cuttingly intimate record of post–May ’68 disillusionment as glimpsed via a rocky ménage ŕ trois. Though he completed only one other feature—the similarly personal, Bressonian coming-of-age gem My Little Loves—and another fascinating cycle of shorts exploring the relationships between language, image, performance, and meaning, Eustache’s small but influential body of work constitutes a vital trove of self-inquiry, structural exploration, and humanistic yearning.

FEATURES: The Mother and the ***** (1973), My Little Loves (1974)

SHORTS: Robinson’s Place (1963), Santa Claus Has Blue Eyes (1966), The Virgin of Pessac (1969), Numéro zéro (1971), The Pig (1975), A Dirty Story (1977), The Virgin of Pessac 79 (1979), Alix’s Pictures (1980), Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Delights (1981), Employment Offer (1982)
