Oh, and by the way, I was an early adopter of hd dvd, but when it failed I threw in the towel, and went completely blu and was excited to embrace it. The thought of it disappearing is troubling.

Here's what:

-Blu-ray is much more popular, so this is NOT going to sell
-Many people have blu-ray players and movies right now, so this is the WRONG time to release the format.

So, blu-ray will still triumph.

It's a blog?? HD-DVD is dead. Don't believe everything you read on the net. The blogger is a loon.

I have read stuff by this guy before, and I really think he is just a blu-ray hater for some reason. I don't think this will hold but if it does, hopefully those discs will play on Region-A blu-ray players, or at least blu-ray players, in general.

This guy doesn't have a clue. CBHD is a format that will stay limited to China and a few Asian countries. It will hardly be a drop in the bucket. The rest of the world either is already converting to Blu-ray or soon will.

It was the same back in the days when DVD first emerged. Japan and other industrialized countries went with DVD (the superior product) while some Asian countries, with China leading them, went with cheaper VCD because DVD was simply too expensive for them.

As the French would say: "L'histoire se répète" (History repeats itself)

Do you think China will start supporting that format more like they did with VCD? I mean, there are some movies that I want that have just recently come out on DVD and they are 20-25 years old! It would just really suck if they decided to slowly put out things on blu and really get behind that format (unless that format could play on a blu-ray player, then I wouldn't really care)

It's science fiction, an exercise in "wish fulfillment" if you will. He's entitled to his opinion, just as I'm entitled to ignore it.

I actually agree with you on this. when I was overseas a few years ago when VHS was mainstream, Beta still existed, actually there were a couple of countries in Asia that were still producing/using Beta equipment.

this may be the case CBHD.

Considering the CBHD format is based on the HD DVD spec, it is 99.999% unlikely be compatible with Blu-ray players.

Oh, come on. We all know that digital downloads will replace Blu-ray by next year, not this CBHD stuff. Seriously, hasn't this guy been reading Steve Jobs' blog?

What do I care? Let China have its HD DVD vs Blu-ray format war. Here in North America it is all a thing of the past. I don't have to chew my nails and pull my hair out over anything home entertainment related any longer because it's clear sailing for me.

And, if it does become successful in China, it's not like they will bring it back to North America in 3 years when it finally gets a strong enough foothold to be considered as a contender because Blu-ray will be far too rooted over here for anyone to want to adopt anything new AGAIN.

EDIT: I honestly thought it would be another 2 months before this type of FUD came back to the surface... Thought it would surface again just in time to be planted in consumers minds for Christmas shopping season to possibly disuade them from considering Blu-ray technology even further.

I just read this on Ars. The only thing I have to say is I wish Blu-Ray disks were that cheap. Other than that I don't see this flooding the market any time soon.

This just silly, even if China never fully adopts Blu-ray and do basically adopt a variant of HD-DVD, in the end it will be mostly limited to China and piracy will still be crushing both of those formats within China. Basically no format will be as big as VCDs and pirated movies which come in all formats there

Well with all of the movies that I want from China, (Hong Kong and mainland) if this CBHD format holds up there I might cave in because getting those discs at those prices would be a steal, not to mention some of those companies are so slow to put out blus

I think that in 2 years that both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will be obsolete, due to VHS making a comeback!

I agree, sounds like someone is just trying to make a story due to his personal opinion of Blu-Ray.
