Default Elemental Designs Vs Klipsch

Im curious which elemental design Subwoofer would be on par or better with the klipsch RW-10d Subwoofer.

I'm no pro, but I know the A3-300 performs extremely well and is right within that price range. They're very popular with people on this site

The eD a2-300 +

I believe Nezff (sp?) traded in a Klipsch Reference 12 for an A2 and said the difference was pretty big.

When looking for a subwoofer do you go more for watts? For instance a 500watt sub will hit harder then a 200 watt subwoofer?

Not necessarily, enclosure and driver definitely play a part as well.

For either a forward or down firing sub, I would suggest you place a carpet underneath the sub to help decouple any reflections off your wood floors. The carpet should help with the sound of the sub by tightening up the bass and removing any sub and floor interaction that could result in coloration of the sound from the two.

I know BD should be in here eventually to give you a better response.

In any case, there isn't any audible difference between the two. If you have kids or pets, I'd suggest a downward firing sub to keep pesky fingers and claws away from the driver. Just ensure that hot wheels or barbie dolls don't end up in any port that might be in visible access to the kids. Forward firing tend to cost more just because of the cost involved with providing a grill with the sub. Also involved with the cost of a forward firing sub are the aesthetics of the enclosure and driver itself, as I'm sure most people don't want a plain jane cone, dust cap, enclosure in visible site. All in all, WAF could play an important part on how big the sub can be and how 'nice' the sub has to look.

Having an eD A2-300, it's more than enough to pressurize my 1600sq. ft. room. I have a lot of dynamic head room now that I have a nice placement for the sub and have also tweaked the output as to get the cleanest, un-clipped signal from the receiver.

And compared to the Sub-10 from Klipsch, my A2-300 will walk all over that thing on terms of sheer output, dynamic head room, clarity, definition, and punch. I know this because I auditioned the Sub-10 and Sub-12 several times before taking a leap on the once, not so popular A2-300&eD sub fan bus.

In fact, I think I mention the comparison between the Sub-10 and A2-300 in my review found on the Elemental Designs thread on page one.

Cheers, hope this helps.

No it doesn't matter, both types can perform very well. As for the hardwood flooring, the sub will perform well. You could throw an area rug under it though. And it's also recommended to build a riser. There's a riser thread on here you might wanna check out, everyone that's built one has said it makes a big difference. Let us know which sub you choose to get

A subwoofer's performance depends on many factors:
  1. Size and construction of the enclosure.
  2. Design, number, and size of the ports.
  3. Quality of the amplifier as well as its true power rating.
  4. Quality and size of the driver.
  5. Dampening material such as polyfill.
  6. The placement in the room with respect to your listening area.
As a general rule, down-firing or front-firing subwoofers do not matter. The placement in the room is by far the most important factor. Normally, subwoofers play loud in a corner or against the walls. The worst position for a sub is in the middle of the room. There are scientific reasons for these.

For the same reason, if you sit against the wall, the bass sound will be too loud and boomy and will make you tired. If you sit exactly in the middle of the room. You can hardly hear any bass. That is the main reason people use two subwoofers so that they get a more even and smoother bass sound across the room.

If you have a wood floor or tiles, it is a good idea to put an area rug under the sub. A rug makes the sub more stable and will absorb any noises coming out of the port.

If you have children or pets, buy a down-firing subwoofer. If you don't have children or pets and enjoy looking at a woofer, buy a front-firing subwoofer. In general, the quality of the bass sound is not affected by the driver's orientation.

This is a quote from Sunfire, a manufacturer of high-end subwoofers:
Quote:
The woofer cone can be mounted one of two ways. The first way is called, down firing and the second is called front firing. Subwoofer cones that are down firing are typically on the bottom of the subwoofer cabinet. When they are front firing they are on the side of the cabinet. One of these is not necessarily better then the other. It's just a matter of design and your own personal taste.
Here is what Dr. Poh Hsu of Hsu Research said in an interview by GoodSound:
Quote:
SE: I've noted that many subwoofers with good reputations for music applications use down-firing rather than front-firing drivers. Is this just coincidence or does it reflect a particular design philosophy?

PH: I feel that's just a coincidence. In the case of the VTF-2, the down-firing design was chosen to save money. A down-firing woofer doesn't need a grill to protect it. The upcoming VTF-3 will have a forward-firing woofer because the box is larger. We feel it would look too plain and large without a grille.
And finally, a discussion of down-firing versus front-firing subwoofers on Hsu Research forum:

As mentioned, positioning of the sub is very important, and can help somewhat. Try putting your sub in a corner or close to a wall to see if it improves the bass response any at your seating position. However, you will most likely get the very best results from two subs.

I'll also go a little farther in regards to your hardwood floor, and recommend you try an Aurelex Subdude or Gramma under your sub for the best results at decoupling it from the floor.

In general, yes, but your room is not symmetrical. Bass is a funny thing, and there are no black and white rules. You may have to try it out and see.

You would use a 1 male/2 female Y-splitter. You can get good shielded ones from cablesimple (seems monoprice ones look rather cheap to me)

http://www.cablesimple.com/index.php...oducts_id=5000

This would be run out of your single "sub-out" from the back of your receiver. It will split the LFE signal so you can run 2 subs.

To expand a little on what Forsberg said, you can split the LFE output signal from any receiver with a sub out connection because the LFE signal is not amplified. This won't cause any problems at all.

Since I don't know how long of a run you need, here are 4 different lengths for an RCA Audio sub cable from Monoprice:

3 Foot:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

6 Foot:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

12 Foot:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

25 Foot:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

(The Y-splitter link is in one of my previous posts.)

With one sub, you would not need to use it at all. Just run one of the RCA audio cables I provided in my previous post from the sub-out on the back of the receiver to your sub. If your sub has a left and right input, you can use the left input directly into the sub and you will be fine. If you want a Y-splitter for the back of the sub itself, to use both the left and right inputs, you would then need a 1 female/ 2 male Y-splitter.
