Cool

I know this could be a "glitch", but according to bestbuy.com, all the stores in my area have it in stock. See for yourselves...search Houston, TX. However, it's also showing a release date of 8/18 on the site....

I'll go check when I get off of work in 10 minutes...

Yes...I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and thinking it was one of the coolest movies back then. I too will be picking this up when it comes out. I was so looking forward to it today though...oh well!

Angry Must've been moved back

I went to two Best Buys and Target looking for this disc today and no one had it. This is one of my childhood favorites. I was very excited to watch this with my son tonight. But, the street date has probably been pushed back. Crap.

I still have my HD DVD copy of The Last Starfighter. Thought it looked ok.The Dolby True HD sounds great thoe.
I wonder how mutch better the DTS-HD on the Blu-Ray is going to sound compared to The Dolby True HD audio on The HD DVD version?

This was a great movie for the time and I thought it would hold up well enough. I'll rent it on blu and see before I buy it.

Have you forgotten we're living in the YouTube age?

(There are some very good reasons why 1981-1989 were the Summers of Love for sci-fi/fantasy, and this was right smack in 1985.
And when Robert Preston made his mid-80's comeback with "Victor/Victoria", you knew ya got trouble in River City.)

yeah, I went to best buy and Fry's and both showed the date pushed back 2 weeks, I was bummed, especially since earlier this morning it showed they had the movie in stock. I have a feeling they do have the movie on hand, but due to the studio changing the release date, they can't legally sell it yet. Oh well, whats 2 weeks? But hey, I got my BSG complete series box set to keep me until then, hahah.

Or it's a recall to fix a defect.

For fans of "The Last Starfighter", Tampa Bay.com's "Stuck in the 80's" has a podcast dedication to the film:

http://pod.sptimes.com/stuckinthe80s172.mp3

Hehe...relive the moments from the film...

Anyway, I'll pick it up when released. I saw it on Wal-Mart as a DVD on sale for $5 a few months ago and picked it up and watched it for nostalgia. I loved this film as a child and I remember going to the theater several times to watch this.

Btw, do Universal BD releases for classic films get a lower price point or go on sale often like Sony's older catalog titles?

First "review" hints at possible NEW transfer

Here's an excerpt...I've never heard of the review site before and I'm sure it's not anywhere near as professional as a site like ours, but it's the 1st review I've come across so I thought I'd pass it along:
Quote:
The strange thing about this film is that the fashions and vehicles (that people consider to be cool) have all come around again. When you see the clothes and overall style of the characters you'll be right at home; the style is the same in 2009! Frightening, I know, but the reason I bring this up is because the movie looks gorgeous in Blu-ray. With these little elements in the film you are drawn into it more and you forget that this was made in 1984 (until you see the Star Wars sheets -- then you become insanely jealous). The visuals have been cleaned up for this 25th anniversary and you'll be glad they were. As for the audio, you'll be happy with the sound effects and music.

I've seen this movie many times. It's a great 80's film, probably one I remember as being a favorite of mine at the time. The plot is pretty simple, there is a guy in a small town who is pretty good at a game....so good in fact that his high score registers with the aliens and they recruit him to help in a war. I love the plot, love the scifi element and thought the creature designs were pretty cool.

I wouldn't blind buy this movie without knowing your taste in movies, but if you like 80's movies, like the scifi genre, give the movie a bit of slack for its time....then you should definitely check it out.

I'll be picking this up, but my price point is somewhere around $12-$14...

Looks like it indeed is a new transfer. I'm glad it's not just a HD-DVD port.
