Update: A member (KobayashiMaru) has pointed out that the booklet has been collated in the wrong order. He's kindly provided the correct way to re-combine it in this post.

Quote:
Lucy (Rosanna Arquette, Pulp Fiction) is an underpaid waitress at "Dali", a terminally hip New York City restaurant, who's seriously in need of cash. Dali's new, mysterious, charming (and very in debt) bartender, Monte (David Bowie, The Hunger) needs to marry someone, anyone, by the end of the week... or else. Together they join forces-- along with Lucy's lingerie designing best friend, Viv (Eszter Balint, Stranger Than Paradise) -- to rob the popular eatery and solve their financial woes. However these three are far from master criminals and they soon learn that in robberies, as in love, things never go as planned.

This "lively and amusing" (Los Angeles Times) romantic caper co-stars Andre Gregory (Demolition Man), Buck Henry (Heaven Can Wait) and Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God) and features "David Bowie's zaniest most underrated film role" (Collider) in this engaging romantic comedy from acclaimed director Richard Shepard (The Matador) in this never before seen director's cut.

Original post:

[Show spoiler]MVD have acquired the rights to comedy crime film The Linguini Incident (1992), which stars David Bowie, and Rosanna Arquette, and are planning a Blu-ray release under the Marquee line later this year. It was scanned, and restored in 4K, and will also include a never-before-seen Director's Cut according to the Media Play News article posted below. I'll update the post when cover art, and other details come in.

Quote:

MVD Entertainment Group has acquired North American rights to Emmy-winning director Richard Shepard’s debut film, The Linguini Incident, which stars the late David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette.

Shepard went on to direct the hit streaming series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” as well as the films The Matador and Dom Hemingway.

MVD is planning a limited theatrical release for the film, followed by a digital and physical media release under the company’s “Marquee Collection” banner. Dates have not yet been announced.

The Linguini Incident is a crime comedy about a perennially underpaid waitress named Lucy (Arquette) and Monte (Bowie), a mysterious, charming (and very in debt) bartender. Lucy is seriously in need of cash and Monte needs to marry someone, anyone, by the end of the week, or face dire consequences at the hands of his creditors.

The two join forces with Lucy’s lingerie-designing best friend, Viv
(Eszter Balint), to rob their terminally hip New York City restaurant and solve their financial woes. However, these three are far from master criminals and they soon learn that in robberies, as in love, things never go as planned.

The Linguini Incident, originally released in 1992, also stars Oscar winner Marlee Matlin, Buck Henry, Andre Gregory, Viveca Lindfors, James Avery and Maura Tierney.

Shepard, who also co-wrote the film’s script, and producer Sarah Jackson re-claimed the rights to the film from Academy Entertainment, scanned and restored the movie in 4K and developed a never-before-seen director’s cut.

“I’m thrilled that the great folks at MVD are going to re-release The Linguini Incident and present this brand-new director’s cut, with an incredibly beautiful transfer,” Shepard said. “It’s going to be a fun discovery or rediscovery for fans of Bowie, Arquette or independent films of the early 90s.”

“I’m a huge fan of Richard’s body of work, especially The Matador, and one of the great privileges of my career is getting to collaborate with some of my favorite filmmakers and help bring their passion projects back to life,” said Eric D. Wilkinson, director of acquisitions at MVD Entertainment Group.

“The Linguini Incident is a criminally underrated gem, and I’m excited to
be re-introducing Richard’s restored director’s cut the way it was meant to be seen under our prestigious ‘Marquee Collection’ banner.”

The deal was negotiated by producer Jackson and Lawrence Kopeikin on behalf of the filmmakers and by Wilkinson on behalf of MVD.

Variety published an article today about the movie:
https://variety.com/2024/film/news/r...te-1235977723/

The good:
Quote:
Before Shepard could recut the film and consider a Blu-ray release, he first had to track down both the rights and the negative. “The paper trail went cold because all the companies that had invested in the movie had gone bankrupt,” he says. “We finally found out that the Screen Actors Guild had claimed the copyright of the movie because no residuals been paid, which is very rare situation.”

The complete dailies were never found, but after much research, Shepard managed to unearth a longer version that had screened in 35mm in Austria and was still sitting in a lab.
The bad:
Quote:
Shepard was able to reframe shots, add zooms and “make a scene that had very basic coverage feel like it has two or three extra shots in it.”

Bowie in a what sounds like a heist rom-com? That sounds very intriuguing.

I read that article too and was concerned by that line, but when I saw this cut at the premier I don't think I would be able to tell you which shots were the altered zooms if my life depended on it. I'm guessing that only someone who has really seen this movie a lot would notice.

MVD shipped it out already. Tracking says next Tuesday, but who knows if that's taking the holiday into account. If no one gets it earlier I'll post my uneducated impressions of it.

Cool Booklet Printed Incorrectly

I got my Blu-Ray of "The Linguini Incident (Director's Cut)" today, and discovered that the booklet pages are printed out of order. Other industrious owners of this gem may want to un-staple the booklet and re-bind the pages in the proper order, as it looks like a collating error at the printers.

Here is the correct page order (numbers for the Rinaldi essay, letters for the Shepard essay):
0: Cover
1: 1
2: 4
3: 5
4: 8
5: A
6: D
7: E
8: F
9: C
10: B
11: 7
12: 6
13: 3
14: 2
15: G

Jeez, it wouldn't be an MVD release without some QC issue .. I'll make note of that in the first post.

I haven’t seen the booklet yet - is fixing it just a matter of removing the staples and reordering the double pages at that point, or do you have to not only remove the staples, but also cut them into single pages to reorder them properly?

KobayashiMaru's post had me thinking it could simply be rebound (no shade to KM, just my read of the comment), but once I had the staples out I immediately saw this was not possible. Just looking at the "cover page," aka the page that one sees on the outside of the booklet, one side is printed correctly, with front cover on one side of the fold and the end of Shepard's essay, which is second, on the other. However, printed on the reverse of this piece of paper are pages 1 and 2 of the first essay, rather than page 1 of the first essay and the second-to-last page of Shepard's. That said, it is arguably still much easier to read when the staples are taken out.
