United Kingdom Shock Waves (88 Vault #12) (88 Films)

Pre-order: Amazon.co.uk
Release date: April 22nd, 2024

Quote:
Beneath The Living... Beyond The Dead... From The Depths of Hell's Ocean! In the dark days of World War II, the Nazi High Command ordered its scientists to create a top secret race of indestructible zombie storm troopers - un-living, unfeeling, unstoppable monstrosities that killed with their bare hands. They were known as The Death Corps. No member of this horrific SS unit was ever captured by the Allied Forces - and, somewhere off the coast of Florida, they have survived... Peter Cushing (STAR WARS), Brooke Adams (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) and John Carradine (THE BOOGEY MAN) star in this suspenseful and genuinely creepy shocker co-written and directed by Ken Wiederhorn (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II). One of the great horror "sleepers" of the 1970s, SHOCK WAVES has been freshly transferred and fully restored in High Definition from the only known surviving materials!

High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray Presentation in 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio

Sweet! Never got around to picking up the US release, so this'll do.

Looks like it has exactly the same extras so you'll save money that way.

I'm in the same boat. Didn't get the Blue Underground yet, so might as well go for this one.

Love this movie. So atmospheric. Have had the Blue Underground release for years. Also owned this on VHS from Vipco which carried an 18 rating I presume it was for the trailers. Nice to see this getting a BD release here.

I think everything Vipco released had an 18 slapped on it, no matter how tame it might be. I imagine it helped with the sales from their target audience.

From my recollection, most of the kills are drownings or strangulations, so it's all pretty bloodless. As you say, it's more about the atmosphere.

Still, you get Peter Cushing & John Caradine, zombies walking along the ocean floor 26 years before Pirates of the Caribbean did the same thing, & Brooke Adams spends most of the film in a bikini, which is always a plus.

It's a fun flick that never quite lived up to the vhs artwork (but then what did in the 80s?). I'm amazed nobody's tried to remake it yet.

Own the DVD. Great little movie!

Never did get around to upgrading to BD.

Any chance of this title getting a 4K release?

Another fan of the film here. Very atmospheric and little to no bloodletting. I have the BU release so was hoping we'd see a remaster with this release since the US release ain't a looker, but it seems not, and with what looks like all the same extras.

Regardless worth a purchase if you don't have any previous blu ray versions

That was due to the trailers they always had on it being 18 rated ones.

That is an interesting marketing technique.

I can remember buying their Vault of Horror DVD and wondering why it was an 18 then realising it had trailers for Mountain Of The Cannibal God and Cannibal Holocaust on it

Shock Waves is a fun film although it feels like a
[Show spoiler]TV movie sometimes
it does have its moments.

Here in Norway, distributors set their own ratings for home video. One distributor made up a "21 years and over" when they released Hostel on DVD. Worked like a charm!

From 88's socials:

Glad to see the original art is still intact on the main case. Not a fan of the new slipcase art.

I think the slip art is pretty good. Won't be picking it up, myself, as I have the BU release.

I don't think so, it's never looked especially sharp.

The old Nostalgia and Comics store in Brum used to have a gigantic poster for this up on one of the interior walls, presumably it was for a billboard. I saw that for years before Vipco put the sell-thru VHS out, and I finally got to see it.
Loved it ever since. Did Vipco ever do a dvd of this one? I don't recall one.
I have the Blue Underground dvd, and there's some noticeable compression issues, so an upgrade is very appreciated.

Most of the trailers were usually the same 3 or 4 one of which was Cannibal Holocaust.

There was a DVD from Vipco but it was their usual poor quality effort and not much of an improvement over the VHS.
