I’m not familiar with Rimini Editions, are they usually English subs friendly?

This is a very good UHD from an excellent master. Yes, it’s free of teal, DigiSmear, DNR, raised blacks,… as a competent party did the grading (Lumière).

The encode (BD-66, Dolby Vision) is almost spotless, however some (close to blown-out) highlights don’t look too good but it isn’t the biggest concern as grain exposure is otherwise excellent.

No English subs are available.

I’ll provide screenshots as soon as the disc can be opened.

Is there an English subtitle file available that can be synced up to it?

Do you also happen to have one for Le Homme de Rio and Le Magnifique?

I have a feeling Kino will eventually release Le Magnifique but there is no guarantee it will be better than the French release, it may in fact be worse encoding wise.

I’m very sorry but I only have German subs for both of these. I’ve synced L’homme de Rio last week and was looking for good English subs on the web but couldn’t find any. I resorted to German and found a great file. The UHD of Le magnifique already has German subs, which is enough for me. If I have the time, I’ll make you an English file though.

I should have a file for Adieu poulet later this week.

How does a subtitles file work in practice? Do you plug a USB stick into the player?

I appreciate your efforts here but I'll be honest I haven't the faintest how it works. If I buy the film how do I apply the file to the images?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on your setup. Some 4K players (Oppo) have the ability to play custom subtitles from a USB stick, otherwise I’m afraid you need to import the BD/UHD into your computer and merge the subtitle file with the movie with software like MKVToolnix. That way you have one file of the film with English subs and could then play it back in your home theater via an external SSD, cloud- or NAS system for example which you’d then access via an app like Infuse for Apple TV’s, KODI or Plex. You’d have a digital library of the films you own on disc but customized to your needs when discs don’t provide them.
