Default Microsoft teases a new, ultra-powerful Xbox, but will it seal 4K Blu-ray's fate?

It’s more likely to seal Microsoft’s console fate than have any significant impact on blu-ray. Xbox is getting absolutely killed on the console side of things, and Gamepass isn’t making the headway they hoped for as a loss leader. The fact this article implies a two tier appproach with S and X is going to happen again would make the next MS console dead on arrival again.

And with MS exclusives supposedly coming to PlayStation? Who exactly is EVER going to buy a Xbox again?

Let me know when Sony removes disc drives from all their consoles (I know the rumored slim doesn’t have a dedicated drive) and makes no attachable options. That will be a troublesome sign, not anything MS does.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that physical movie people are always a step or two ahead of the businesses. We know where to find a 4K when our country only gets a lesser disc (or sometimes no disc at all). We know what brands of hardware to buy and which ones to avoid. When one company says “we’re out of the player market, physical media is dying”, we’re the first ones to come up with more obscure (and usually better) hardware manufacturers to buy from. When one store or website kills discs, we find at least three or four more sites/stores to take the old one’s place.

My hunch is no. Just because Microsoft and the author made their decree that 4K is unnecessary, that doesn’t necessarily make it so. All this means is come 2028, I’ll have no need for the new Xbox, which will save me quite a bit of money (which I’ll probably spend on more discs).
