The short answer is Japan released both cours separately in box sets. Sentai decided to call them seasons and packaged them together. It’s really not that big of a deal.

The former. The new series is a “Best Of” collection that pulls from both the manga, as well as the original 1981-86 TV anime series. YMMV.

I only watched the first 8 before my HiDive sub ended and while it wasn't as magical as seeing the original 20 years ago, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the rest.

To someone unfamiliar, can the OVAs be viewed independently? I thought about collecting the TV series but I just don't have time to watch nearly 200 episodes of anything these days. I figured the OVA series could be a more easily digestible jumping-on point for me.

I'd say yes. They assume you know the characters, so you might be a little confused in the beginning. The first OVA Inaba the Dreammaker is actually my favorite installment from UY outside of Beautiful Dreamer.

All the sets are now reviewed, and sorry for the rant here, but someone really should have been paying more attention. Discotek Media stated multiple times they were not allowed to include any extras, and the reviews make it seem like Discotek intentionally skimped on extras when again, the Japanese licensor explicitly told them, no extras. Rather annoying to see this. The first page in this very thread shows this. This disclaimer should have been included in all these reviews.

There are no on disc supplements provided on the release. This seemed to be quite the surprise given the stature of this beloved classic. Nonetheless, the set does include a special o-card slipcover on the pressing. The set includes inner print art-work as well.

There are no bonus features included on the release. The release does come with an elegantly designed o-card slipcover and the art-work features an inner-art print. The disc art adds some extra value to the package as well. Unfortunately, I would have loved to see some interviews with the Japanese cast or behind-the-scenes with director Mamoru Oshii but nothing of the sort is included here. Nonetheless, slipcover fans can appreciate the quality slip provided on the release.

The release comes with a nice o-card slipcover. The slipcover art-work is the same as the key-art on the sleeve underneath the slipcover. Discotek does a nice job with the print-quality of the slipcovers and it certainly adds a nice collectability factor to the release. The end result is a package that is wonderful to hold in hand and it makes a great impression on the shelf, too.

Unfortunately, the release is otherwise barebones and does not come with any additional supplemental content – some art galleries or interviews would have added some extra value to the package.

The release includes an o-card slipcover. The slipcover artwork is the same as the art featured underneath the slipcover. Discotek Media did a nice quality print on the slipcover and it adds a nice element of collectability to an already fantastic release. The set looks great when held in hand and it also will fit right in on any media shelf.

The set does lack on-disc supplemental features. Unfortunately, the lack of any on disc extras is the main area of the release that is disappointing. The release could have had some value added with some audio commentaries, interviews, and art galleries showcasing early sketches and designs – the absence of any art galleries being one of the most missed inclusions (as Discotek Media does a good job with this aspect on many releases).
