Blu-ray Samurai

I think the original mini-series is pretty damned good. It nails the romantic plotline rather well. The cast is phenomenal, and it was amazing that a 1980 US TV movie utilized so much Japanese dialog. Mad respect. The book is one of the greatest novels I have ever read. Easily in my top three all-time list. And I've read more than, like, TEN books! ![]() Looking forward to this in a couple weeks. A lot. Last edited by KcMsterpce; 02-13-2024 at 08:15 AM. |

About the only thing he got wrong is that it could have been Ken Watanabe as well. When it comes to Japanese actors of a certain age there are pretty much only two that American audiences are familiar with.
It used to only be one but Sanada has made up a ton of ground in the last 10-15 years. |

Sanada is an indisputable Asian action movie star and a protege of Sonny Chiba, with martial arts and stunt credentials, so he's the best and only real choice for something like this, which requires the authenticity of Japanese actors and cultural understanding, something he demonstrated with his participation in "47 Ronin", both in front of the camera and leading the other actors behind it.

I watched the first part (episode) and I'm 100% sold. The best stream/download option is on through the Hulu section of the Disney+ app, so look there, if you want quality. In the Extras, there are "English Dub" versions of the episodes where the Japanese dialog from key characters is (mostly) replaced with English dubbed versions, which is somewhat hokey, but it will help you if are one of those who just put it on in the background while you're working on stuff.

Hulu content offered through the D+ app is in UHD, whenever applicable and available, if using a 4K display device. They even show 4K Korean dramas.

Just finished the first 2 episodes and could have easily watched the entire season in one go if they dropped them all at once.
I wasn't sold on Cosmo James from the trailer and thought he was just a b-tech Tom Hardy but, he was exceptional, especially in the scene where he explains the world to Toranaga. If they continue down this path and stick the landing this could easily be the best season of television since GOT season 4 or True Detective season 1. |

I was also slightly apprehensive with Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne. So far he has been fantastic. A very rare occasion where I'm eagerly awaiting the next episode of a tv mini series. |
