Default Queen - Rock Montreal + Live Aid 4K UHD

Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid 4K Blu-ray

Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid 4K Blu-ray

Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid 4K Blu-ray

Release date : 10 May

Queen Rock Montreal captures the world’s most iconic rock band at the very peak of their live powers. Recorded in 1981 and recently released as a record-breaking digitally restored IMAX concert film, this landmark moment in the band’s history is now being released as both double Blu-Ray and double 4K Ultra High Definition packages, plus double CD and triple vinyl packages.

Queen Rock Montreal presents Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon at their most exciting and exhilarating. As Brian May puts it, this is Queen “live and dangerous.”

Both the 4K UHD and Blu-ray packages will contain two discs in them: Disc one will feature “Rock Montreal” in full frame and the Live Aid performance. Disc two will feature “Rock Montreal” in widescreen and also includes a bonus 11-minute Live Aid rehearsal feature with interviews from the period leading into Live Aid, along with rehearsal footage. The 4K package will feature “Rock Montreal” in both SDR and HDR formats on both discs, to optimize the viewing experience.

The 35mm original negative has been scanned to ensure the highest possible resolution, which was then examined frame by frame to remove any dirt, damage or splices to enhance the sharpness and quality of the picture.

Disc one of the 2x4K package features Queen Rock Montreal in Full Frame screen format, as it was originally intended to be viewed, along with their iconic Live Aid performance, presented for the first time in upscaled HD with Dolby Atmos audio. Disc two presents the Montreal concert in widescreen format, and a behind the scenes featurette composed of Queen rehearsing for Live Aid interspersed with an interview with the band, recorded just prior to Live Aid. Both screen formats of the 4K version of Queen Rock Montreal can be displayed in either HDR or SDR. The Queen Rock Montreal and Live Aid performances are presented with LPCM Stereo, DTS-HD Master Audio, and, for the first time, Dolby Atmos. Queen Rock Montreal also includes a commentary track recorded by Brian May & Roger Taylor talking discussing the film.

The double Blu-ray release features Queen Rock Montreal in Full Frame on disc one, as it was originally intended to be viewed, along with their iconic Live Aid performance, presented for the first time in upscaled HD with Dolby Atmos audio. Disc two contains the widescreen format of the concert, along with a behind the scenes featurette composed of Queen rehearsing for Live Aid interspersed with an interview with the band, recorded just prior to Live Aid. The Queen Rock Montreal and Live Aid performances are presented with LPCM Stereo, DTS-HD Master Audio, and, for the first time, Dolby Atmos. Queen Rock Montreal also includes a commentary track recorded by Brian May & Roger Taylor discussing the film.

Bonus Features

Audio commentary by Brian May and Roger Taylor

This will be a wide release, but additionally the INXS and Clapton 4K UHD concerts did NOT feature HDR so this will surely get some attention. Can't wait! Wish I had been able to make the IMAX showing but schedule didn't work out.

Love to see it. I would love to see MJ’s Live at Wembley too.

INXS did NOT feature HDR? I remember that it did and the review on bluray.com states that it has HDR10. I must check my copy to be sure.

About Queen, I was able to make the IMAX showing and unfortunately for me it looked very processed. Not the levels of Jackson's Beatles but not that far off.

INXS has HDR10, for sure.

I'm on board for this. Just about the only thing I liked about Bohemian Rhapsody was the bonus feature that had the extended Live Aid performance in Atmos. Sounded lovely and I kept the disc just for that. Now I can say goodbye, at last.

Yeah, same for me haha.
But boy... Freddie Mercury sure can do a good impression of Rami Malek. Wow!

Should we expect to order this from regular retailers or just get it from the Queen store? In simply for live aid and excited to see Montreal.

If this looks better than the mediocre IMAX presentation I’d be interested but I’m expecting to be disappointed.

These were my thoughts:

Hw wears increasingly fewer layers of clothing as the set progresses, looking absolutely iconic with the Superman vest (he’s not the only rockstar, like Iggy Pop, to go shirtless on stage - it must get quite sweaty!) or the sporty look with tight shorts, making him distinct from the rest of the band, even if Brian May is still recognisable by the hair and direct address out into the audience and Roger Taylor’s quite demanding drumming. The songs are mostly the more iconic ones as collated on Greatest Hits, though there are definitely some lesser known ones too, plus Under Pressure (sans Bowie) and a cover of Jailhouse Rock. It’s not one of the best concert films of all time and Queen film out with the director, but it’s still entertaining to watch the band perform.

However, the IMAX release is a disappointment by the complete absence of grain. Not expecting as much grain as a 16mm D.A. Pennebaker film, but with 35mm it absolutely should be present, instead it creates a digital look as though they were shooting on modern HD cameras, even if it is far from the AI mess of Get Back. It’s not filmic at all, when realistically IMAX should be the best presentation of a film.

I saw the Montreal special in IMAX and it was great. It's an old recording so it's not perfect but still an awesome experience. Since they're adding Live Aid this is definitely a day one purchase for me.

Can't wait to crank up the speakers and let the sound embrace me.

In for this but you know it's gonna be sandblasted with DNR, the existing HD transfer of this is a goopy mess.

I saw the IMAX presentation and sadly to my eyes it looked like the exact same HD transfer with the same weird elastic grain warping. I was shocked to learn afterwards that it's apparently from a new scan.

The IMAX presentation did sound amazing, so the 4K disc will be worth the upgrade for that alone, but I'm not holding my breath for the visuals.

Huge Queen fan but never got around to picking up the previous Blu-ray for this (I have the old DVD and the official CDs) so I'm looking forward to the 4K with Atmos.

All the clips I've seen kinda look like the Blu-ray with the same colour grading, so I'm hoping this isn't some fancy upscale?!

Yeah my bad, turns out the Clapton also has HDR10. No idea why I thought otherwise.
