Were we in a the US thread for Red River then I'd obviously recommend the Criterion hands down, but when you have to factor in other things when importing the UK one is a solid option for a UK buyer. I'm not sure such snark is necessary really. I've never bought a Blu-ray for a booklet. I think it's worth mentioning when one is particularly great too tho, especially in a comparison of two competing titles. |

They way I shop is that I tend to have only one release of a film unless there is a definite reason for owning both. If it is an "ordinary" film I'll choose the cheapest version unless it is reviewed very badly here. But with a classic like Red River, I would like the best available movie PQ and AQ, which in this case seems to be the Criterion release.

...but with a film like Red River, it's worth £7.99 - to me - to own both the MoC and the Criterion. Ditto My Darling Clementine (the Criterion and the Arrow).
There aren't many films where I'd be prepared to do that, simply for different supplements. And as I've said elsewhere, were a gun to be placed at my forehead, a choice would be made. But it's a choice I really don't have to make. |

With the MoC long OOP and the Criterion region-locked? I noticed Capelight have brought out a new version of Red River in Germany. It appears to be a two disc set but not clear which edits it does/doesn't include and what standard of sources it uses.
I have the Criterion DVD so it would need to be a really nice Blu-ray master of the theatrical edit to get me to bite. |
