Default Should I go blu?

Ok, so here's the thing: I have a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD. However, I've yet to upgrade to Blu-ray. (Yeah, I know...). See, the thing is, I'm not sure whether or not I will notice a substantial upgrade over DVD because my standard viewing distance is around 11 to 12 feet, more than the max recommended. But I was wondering what you guys think: Worth the upgrade or not? Thanks!

I say yes but first learn as much as you can about transfers, particularly audio and video codecs. Not to mention HDMI and HT. Good luck with everything.

I was hoping for more detailed answers guys... All the charts I've seen said I wouldn't even benefit from 720p at this distance.

YEs and dont go by the charts, when you see what your TV is capable of I am sure you will be trying to figure a way to move closer to the screen. Not only that you will wonder why you havent transfered sooner, I cant recall the last time I have seen a DVD. I have plenty I just rather pop in a BR...

First off yes.

I think for 40in u should sit 9 to 10ft away since u are a little further I really don't think it will make that much of a difference. If your still not sold go buy a player (a good one) rent a few of your favorite blurays watch them one night if you arnt sold return the player.

You will definitely notice the difference. My friend has a 40" samsung and we sit about 10' away from it, and I am always impressed with the picture quality when I watch blu-ray at his house. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Wait u have a 1080p tv so I imagine u have hd cable? Do you watch the non hd channels instead of the hd channels cause u can't tell the difference from 12ft away?

Nope my cable looks absolutely awful on my tv. Nothing to do with being SD, just very, very poor quality cable. Like VHS is probably better. I never upgraded to HD cuz i don't watch a lot of TV anyway.

Absolutely. You've got the video quality, audio quality, features, extra content, digital copies, and more going for you. At 20 even feet away, you should be able to tell the difference between SD content and HD content.

HD cable will make you want to watch more TV but Blu-ray will make you watch more movies.

First off let me say that if you're looking for someone to tell you "No" I think you may have come to the wrong website...Ha!

I'm gonna agree with everyone and say most definitely YES! There are many reasons to make the jump to blu other than PQ. But as that seems to be your main concern at this time let me tell you thatyou will most certainly notice a difference. I have a 26" 720p LCD in my bedroom that I view from about 12' away that I recently hooked a BD player to just because I was tired of not being able to watch so many of my movies from the comfort of my bed. I can see a noticeable difference....so there is no doubt in my mind that you will notice the difference on your 40" 1080p. Have Fun With It!

My 40" 1080P Sammy in the living room is about 10-12 feet away from me and the blu-ray VS DVD picture quality is very noticeable.

At that distance you will still be able to notice the greater depth of the color spectrum of Blu-ray versus DVD resulting in more accurate colors and higher contrast. Furthermore, while you may not be able to identify each individual pixel at that distance, you can still notice the improved clarity that the additional resolution provides.

If you still remain skeptical you can always have a friend bring their player over with a disc and see for yourself. After that I'm sure you would be sold

Lastly, as others have mentioned, Video is only half of the benefit that Blu-ray provides.

Blu-ray is definitely worth the upgrade, but I'd strongly recommend sitting closer to the screen. At the very least, don't sit any further back than the recommended 720p distance for your size screen. In this case, 94 inches or 7.8 feet.

regardless you will still notice a difference between DVD & BLU at the distance you are currently sitting at.

Most definately yes. BUT one ikkle thing that has been overlooked is....

Are your eyes up to the job ? If not, then get a new eyetest and prescription lenses. It's no good going full HD if you can't appreciate it.
