Any idea why they make and advertise a movie and then never release it? - Blu-ray Forum

A couple of years ago I remember seeing a preview of The Poughkeepsie Tapes at my local theater. I've been waiting and waiting for this movie, and it still has no release date. This isn't the only movie that this has happened to, just one that stands out in my head. How can the studio spend all the money to produce and start an advertising campaign on a movie and then not release it to make some of thier money back?

Because, many movie are not major studio releases. Oftentimes a production will shoot some scenes and/or create trailers, promo stuff, etc. to attract investment to the project. But if no money comes, no movie gets made.

Or, the film is made, but the production cannot find a distributor willing to release it in theaters or on home video.

Poughkeepsie Tapes was too dark if you ask me, what's sad is that's probably what would draw a lot of moviegoers to see it.
