Lady Killer (1937) / The Strange Monsieur Victor (1938) (Grasshopper Film)

Grasshopper Film will be releasing two classic French films from director Jean Grémillon. The first is Lady Killer (Gueule d’Amour) (1937), which stars Jean Gabin, and the second is The Strange Mister Victor (L'Étrange Monsieur Victor) (1938). Both are sourced from 4K restorations. I watched both films (via Metrograph at Home) a couple months ago, and I thought they were both great, with Victor being my favorite of the two. The Blu-ray will have reversible cover art with Lady Killer on one side, and Monsieur Victor on the other.

The first collaboration between filmmaker Jean Grémillon and legendary actor Jean Gabin, this adaptation of a novel by André Beucler features the young Gabin as a Casanova of the French Foreign Legion– the “lady killer” Lucien Bourrache – who meets his match in the mysterious seductress Madeleine (Mireille Balin).

In this moody crime thriller, the well-respected shopkeeper Monsieur Victor (Raimu)—who clandestinely does business with a gang of criminals in the French port town of Toulon—holds onto a terrible secret when the local cobbler Bastien (Pierre Blanchar) is sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Seven years later, the truth comes out.

They are an indie distributor—theatrical and home video, founded 2015. Similar to Cinema Guild, Oscilloscope, or Film Movement. They’ve release several knock-out foreign language films on Blu.

Just noticed, Grasshopper confirms this will be a 2 film set with reversible cover art. Hopefully the Amazon listing gets updated to reflect this

Sold!. Sadly I doubt this will sell well. Reminds me of Cinetrove International who released Midnight in Paris with Raimu. One of my favorite movies. They also released Fric Frac which is a fun little gem. Great releases, but now the label is gone.
