Will we see VideoBit rates on blu-ray hit the Gbps range?? Also how come bitrates change often in certen movies? i was watching tmnt and it was jumping all over the place going as low as dvd Mpbs, yet still looking HD and really good how is this?

Yes, the max blu-ray video rate is 40 Mbit/s and any higher speeds are not needed to support blu-ray 1920x1080/24p AVC or VC-1 coding to obtain a perceivably good quality image in home theaters.

We might see higher bitrates when the 3D standard is added to Blu-ray I hope.

Certainly 3D will require higher rate to maintain the same resolution and this will be possible with 2x and 4x reading. However, it would be a struggle to fit 2hour 3D movie on to a BD with 50G capacity.

no, the specs for BD (and it can't change or newer movies won't be compatible wih older players are
54 mbps -spin/total 48 mbps - content 40 mbps - video Quote:
2) compressed video tends to have two types of frames I and P/B, I frames "describe" the whole picture, P/B frames describe the changes between frames, so if nothing much changes from the previous frame the P/B can be a very low number of bits 3)encoders have two main controls, ABR and MBR, the ABR (average bit rate) tends to be given depending on the size of file that is acceptable (i.e. if you have a 50GB disk and you want 15GB for extras and audio takes up an other 5GB then you want the video to fit in 30GB, so for a 2h movie you would want to be 33mbps so that the video fits on the disk) and MBR which is the max bit rate (i.e. if audio peeks at 10mbps then video has a max of 38mbps) for the most complicated part of the encode. Depending on how much of the film is complicated the encoder will use the MBR and ABR to determine where there needs to be savings. Just because at one point it is 33 and an other 3 does not mean anything, the 3 might be all that is needed while the part that is 33 is severely limited (i.e. for example it reached the max) |

the issue is that you would need it to be compatible with older players or you need a new name (the last thing you want is people buying the blu -ray and bringing it home and it won't play because this is a movie that needs 100mbps instead of the original 54mbps. At least with a different name (and case colour) you can slap them across the head and say "look idiot it say super BD 3D not BD on the case")

1) a desire from studios for a new format (old format broken/cracked, catalogue already sold on it so that getting people to buy becomes hard on the format 2) cool new features that get the early adopter and can get everyone else firmly on board. 1) can happen in around 10 years (like DVD) but 2 ) makes it hard. BD would soon be implementing proper 3D, but we have lossless 7.1 audio and I can't see higher resolution being implemented fast enough to make it relevant short term. The only "obvious" thing is less compression and that might guys like us interested but slightly higher BR can't be a selling point to the general public (as the only or major benefit) only if it goes to losslessly compressed video and that would need extremely high BR and even then it would be a tough sell. My guess is that we might see more of a VHS life span then a DVD one. Quote:

Possibly, but I think we're already reaching the point of diminishing returns for video quality. At a certain point, you have to ask, "how much better do we REALLY need it to be, and is it worth $xx to squeeze a few more lines of resolution that people may not be able to detect anyway?"
