Default 4k issues

So a few months ago I bought an LG 4k region free player. Worked fine fine for a few months. Now it seems to freeze about 1/2 of the discs. Most a brand new with no scratches, finger prints etc. Reg blu discs seem to work fine. Anyone have clue whats the issue? Or did i just get a lemon?

Just use a lint cloth and wipe gently over the finger print marks and light scratches. This will remove the residue. 4K discs are more sensitive due to the large data stored. I always wipe discs before playback so I don't over wear the laser.

Should still be under warranty. Contact LG customer service and have them sort it out.

Yep, sounds like the player is broken, the laser is probably slightly misaligned. If it's still under warranty, contact LG. Cleaning the discs won't help, I suspect.

My LG player gives me plenty of freezing problems. Usually popping the disc in-and-out will solve it if there's nothing wrong with the disc. Maybe the laser does become misaligned and just needs to reset. It's not going to fix itself though.

There's a slight chance if you look under the light that their are minor light dents or scuffs but if that's not the case then it's really how sensitive the player is relative to dust on the disc etc.
If you had a second player you could tell if their was any issues.
Firmware also but very strange why it would skip here and there.

Everyone knocks my Samsung but I never had that problem:

But seriously, if it's under warranty, call LG. Also, cleaning the actual discs (even if they're new and spotless) and possibly using a lens cleaner (ask others, I've personally never had to go that far in the 4K era) could also help.

Yeah, I know right. My Samsung is awesome. I bought mine on release date and I've done one firmware update in that time and she plays everything beautifully. No issues other than I wish I had bought a couple backup players after I found out they discontinued manufacturing…

I was watching The Man Who Fell to Earth on 4K tonight and about 50 minutes into the film the screen started to show blocking in various colours that kept moving around.

I removed the disc (no visible marks of any kind of in) and popped in the Blu Ray which played fine.

Judging from this thread it could be a laser problem - an excuse for me to buy another player - but I'll clean the disc in the next copy of days time to see if it is still a problem.

This is the second 4K disc I've had this happen with. The first was the Australian edition of Rio Bravo.

I've only recently discovered that 4K is very sensitive so I'm glad that i have Blu Ray backs ups for all my 4k discs.

The only real problems I've had, and they're minor, are:

1. My DVD of The Abyss is jiittery, stopping and starting every 30 seconds, like a buffering YouTube video. I chalk it up to clunky authoring, which is an issue with tons of Fox DVDs.

2. My DVD of Pink Floyd - The Wall does the same thing, but only when I play the PCM 2.0 track. The DD 5.1 track plays fine. That supposedly is a real problem with the Samsung, it can't handle a DVD PCM track well (but Blu-rays and 4Ks with PCM are cool).

Neither one justify an upgrade though.

This is the only real problem I have with the 4K format. These discs are like hair-triggered bombs. Even the spotless ones don't work. Two possible theories are that the data is packed together so tightly that dirt or damage affects more information, or that the third layer of BD-100s means that the protection layer of normal Blu-ray discs is gone. I don't know whether either theory is true, but it's worth thinking about.

This is just a more common problem than it should be with the format. I have the Sony x700 and it freezes often. So I bought the Panasonic UB420. That also freezes..

Ive never had a movie freeze, I have played approx. 600+ UHD, over a 1,000 Blus, and several hundred DVD. The first printing of Face off on Bluray is the only thing my player won’t play. I had to update it on one UHD after I got a pop up that said to update the firm ware. It played fine after the update. Except Face off (I bought 3 copies)

I only ever bought one after 45 min. of arguing with my Dad when I was 18, he demanded I buy one and said if I got a taste of winning I would never quit getting them. (He bought them multiple times throughout the week) I broke and bought one for $2 and won $40. Never bought one again, loaned him $20 because he said he knew the pattern and a really big winner would be close to my ticket on the roll. He spent $20, won $10, spent $10, one a free ticket and then lost on the free ticket…I bought a Dr.Pepper, a Reece’s, and then stopped in at a local comic shop and picked up 2 issues of Uncanny X-Men. Still had like $10 bucks left for lunch the next day at Jack N’ The Box

My LG player hates triple layer discs. Hates them. When it's time to switch to the third layer, it freezes.

Test other 100GB discs and see how your player does. If the player does it with other 100GB discs, then you have a player that can't handle them anymore, though it should be fine with the 66GB discs. Many people have reported read issues with the 100GB discs after some time, in addition to the players that were never working well with them to begin with. According to the leaked material about the UHD-BD format development, 100GB discs weren't officially around for the R&D phase - they were still being developed by Samsung/Sony/Panasonic and the wider industry was mostly against including them in the format - and weren't being replicated until long after players had been released.
