Default All We Imagine as Light (2024)

Written and directed by Payal Kapadia, "All We Imagine as Light" is competing for the Palme D'or at Cannes 2024. It has also been acquired by Janus/Criterion, so a physical release is highly likely.

Divya Prabha was also in Ariyippu where she did a fine job. I wish that movie would get a physical release, it was terrific.

'All We Imagine As Light' has become the first Indian movie to be nominated for TWO Golden Globe Awards. 'Best Motion Picture in a Non-English Language' and 'Best Director (Motion Picture category)'.

This marks Payal Kapadia as the first Indian director to ever be nominated for the Best Director (Motion Picture category) at the Golden Globes awards or for that matter at any prestigious International Awards.

PS: Sadly, 'All We Imagine As Light' will not be in consideration at the Oscars, because India chose 'Laapata Ladies' over it as its official entry to the Academy.

Wasn't RRR nominated for Two Golden globe awards as well?

India whiffed it twice recently, first by not submitting RRR when it had incredible momentum, and then not submitting AWIAL. Laapata Ladies was OK, but not Oscar-worthy, and AWIAL won the Grand Prix at Cannes!

It's kind of interesting, because the 1998 committee committee recommended Shankar's Jeans(!!!) as the official selection, giving the justification that the producer Ashok Amritraj's Hollywood presence would be an advantage in promoting the film.

The selection committee comprises of an incompetent bunch of buffoons and political stooges. I read somewhere that they did not find the film (All We Imagine as Light) "Indian enough". Fact is, if you see the film and read a little about the director's past, it's easy to understand why it was not chosen. I'm just glad that the film has found its audiences worldwide and have been winning all the awards and accolades on its own merits. It's truly a remarkable film.

Yeah, the statement was something like AWIAL is like "a European film in an Indian setting" while LL is like "an Indian film in an Indian setting", as though Indian films are of ONE type.

Meanwhile, the UK decides to send a Hindi film “Santosh” directed by Sandhya Suri, as their official entry for the 2025 Oscars.

Well, for obvious reasons it cannot be an English film.
