Is the default Cantonese track the one that was on the older release, or the one with the correct audio?

I'm a bit confused by the audio tracks.

I started watching the UHD with the default Cantonese track but noticed a couple of weird things.

1. During the trial, when the British judge gives his verdict, it sounded like there were two people speaking?
2. During the fight between Jet Li and Yasuaki Kurata, Kurata's voice changed to a different actor!

I ended up switching to the alternative track.

For most of the movie Yasuaki Kurata speaks Japanese but during this scene he starts speaking Cantonese and is dubbed by a different voice actor. I went back and checked the Dragon Dynasty version and the Metropolitan version and it's the same as the default Cantonese track. So although weird this must be the HK theatrical soundtrack

The above, while odd and a bit jarring (I agree), is actually all part of the original tracks. There is a mix of Japanese and Cantonese spoken in the film (and even some English), and different actors dubbed these parts, even when the same character is speaking the lines within a single scene! So the tracks here are all accurate.

On the secondary track, Kurata speaks Japanese throughout that fight.

But isn't this alternative audio track from some incomplete version of the film? I believe someone mentioned that it has hit sounds on misses and so on.

Apologies. I meant to say that the mix of languages is correct for *some* of the audio track variants. I am sure there are way too many out there, and of course I am not intimately familiar with all of them, but the one where you have a mix of Cantonese and Japanese, with different actors voicing the same character, is not an anomaly nor a mistake. That was essentially what I was trying to say. 88 Films was not allowed to use the English track, so I am happy that they are giving us these two other options instead.

Watched this earlier today and am very pleased with the upgrade, shame it didn't come in the usual deluxe hard box but a great release nonetheless.

The previous releases did not use the full original Cantonese audio - it was edited to fit the edited version of the video, had music placement changes, and even weird edits like removing the judge saying he was going to play cricket.

I haven't watched all the way through yet, but the "alternate" Cantonese on this is probably what I would recommend to people.

This is the first WuXia movie I ever bought from the local market stall. This is the movie that started it all for me. After years of watching dozens of great HK new wave movies, this might still be my favorite. All my previous HK new wave movies are 2k restorations, not 4K and I think they all look better than this. Although both look much better than my old blu-ray, I also see no big difference at all between the 4k and blu-ray discs which is what I have always suspected would be the case.

But in this case, for this movie, I don't care. There will never be a better series of fight choreography including the best blindfold fight ever with the best script, direction and acting of all the HK new wave and is still one of the best martial arts movies ever made. Point, blank, period!

Good you liked it, but i must correct you. Wuxia is period films with swordplay. This is defnitley not that, allthough it is a period film.

Just watched this, 88 have done a bang up job here.looks fantastic, so good now you can see the odd quick instance of doubling in some of the epic fights.I watched with the alternate track, no issues for me.
