SYNOPSIS
An early cinematic pioneer with an undeniably pervasive influence, Louis Feuillade made hundreds of films in a short career spanning only a few decades. Today, he is best remembered for his landmark serials Fantômas, Les Vampires, Judex and Tih Minh, four crime epics that have had an immeasurable impact on popular culture around the globe. The Masters of Cinema series is honoured to present these silent masterworks on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK from astonishing 4K restorations.

Adapted from a series of popular novels by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, Fantômas stars René Navarre as the eponymous criminal mastermind. Across the serial’s five episodes, Fantômas is pursued by Inspector Juve (Edmund Breon) and newspaper reporter Jérôme Fandor (Georges Melchior) as he carries out his nefarious schemes. In Les Vampires, journalist Philippe Guérande (Édouard Mathé) attempts to investigate an enigmatic criminal gang operating in the Parisian underworld – a group known only as the Vampires. In Judex, a mysterious vigilante (René Cresté) sets out to bring down a corrupt banker named Favraux (Louis Leubas). Finally, in Tih Minh, a young man (Cresté) returning from an expedition in Indochina becomes embroiled in a game of espionage and thievery with a gang of mysterious jewel thieves.

Feuillade’s crime serials had an enormous impact on some of the greatest filmmakers of the twentieth century, chiefly Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock. They also played an important role in the development of the criminal mastermind and masked vigilante characters that would proliferate in pulp magazines, film, television, radio and comic books over the next few decades, including Dr Mabuse, The Shadow and Diabolik. Feuillade’s celebrated serials are collected here in their entirety alongside a wealth of special features.

A pretty big deal, and I wonder if there's an even bigger deal for #300. Anyway, scraping together the pennies to afford this one, rare for Eureka to go this hard on something! Even the Buster Keaton films were split into volumes and single editions (instead of a singular 11-disc set).

PS: Also be curious to see if they do any other Gaumont titles at the same time. Perhaps some Bresson or Ophuls, or even the Vigo titles that were cancelled some years back?

#1 in box sets, and #12 in DVD + blu-ray on Amazon now, "200+ sold" AND they raise the price 10 pounds. Who thought 2000 copies was a good idea, we are experiencing a replay of the Zulawski set from last year (I had the same Pavlovian one-click reaction at announcement). They seem committed to leaving a fair chunk of change on the table so at this point I suspect Eureka plans on these boxes as quickies to pay off the license costs upfront THEN split the contents into four SKUs for the long tail (Arrow's LE/Standard MO... but for art-house?).

On the bright side, order a handful of copies and pay off your mortgage in early 2025 ("Wait, I am just hearing about this now?" / "I expected it would still be in stock at release date! WTF" / "Guys, just came back in stock at Eureka's webstore... wait, no, all gone again" / "500 pounds on ebay?!?")

What set might be in store to top this one for 2024?

I preordered it this morning, with a large amount of FOMO kicking in already as with so many of these kinds of releases nowadays. We do seem to see stuff like this sometimes selling out pretty quickly, so if you stay on the fence for too long, you may not be able to get it, have to wait for potential regular versions, or having the shitty scalper prices being the only other option for the LE (a route I certainly wouldn’t go down).

All aboard the FOMO train! I've learnt my lesson when it comes to Eureka boxsets, no time to sit on the fence.

I will pre-order it first thing tomorrow (when July begins), trying to stick to monthly budget limits.

I just put in a pre-order on Amazon now, it won't take your money until nearer the release date

I usually prefer to get it straight from the horse's mouth. Especially with Eureka's shipping costs.

HMV looks like they have put the price up by £10 too. Shenanigans afoot.

FOMO or no FOMO, they can jog on.

Especially since they said they struggled, and maybe wouldn’t exist today without all those Kung fu releases. Free international shipping is unique for all the labels to me (next to 88 with their very low £35 threshold). So im happy if they can get the bigger chunk out of my payment.

It was always £90 at HMV from the time they first listed it.

All Amazon have done is price match up to the HMV price as no need for them to be cheaper for those who don’t want to buy direct,

You see the same with Fabulous Film titles where HMV price higher and Amazon adjust up to their price.

As others have noted HMV always over charge on Eureka and it’s only the 20% that makes them cheaper than buying direct. I guess it’s because Eureka don’t give them as large a dealer discount as they get from other labels. Remember it’s only recently that HMV have started restocking Eureka after both sides couldn’t originally do a deal after their most recent administration and sale to the Canadians.

My mistake.

Had a look at Eureka direct, are they not IOSS registered as the tax isn't removed at checkout. Cheeky if Amazon bumped the price up, unless you trust their pre order price guarantee I guess.

Similar issue for me with the HMV 20% codes. The savings don't really add up if you use a forwarder address as the tax and fees make any saving negligible versus going to say Amazon instead.

„…“
Eureka is IOSS registered. Don’t know how this tax removing works since our import tax are nearly the same as the Uk tax so price stays the same as shown on the website.

Unfortunately it is only to select countries - Japan is not one of them - "that will be £10 please"

With VAT removed, Amazon.uk cost me £66.10, and since it was part of a big order (I now leave preorders in my cart till I have accumulated enough over several months to make the per item shipping cheap with the added benefit of shipping separately so import duty threshold is never met) the S&H was just over £1
