New illustration by Katherine Lam
Quote:
Terror lives in the shadows in a pair of mesmerizingly moody horror milestones conjured from the imagination of Val Lewton, the visionary producer-auteur who turned our fears of the unseen and the unknown into haunting excursions into existential dread. As head of RKO’s B-horror-movie unit during the 1940s, Lewton, working with directors such as Jacques Tourneur and Mark Robson, brought a new sophistication to the genre by wringing chills not from conventional movie monsters but from brooding atmosphere, suggestion, and psychosexual unease. Suffused with ritual, mysticism, and the occult, the poetically hypnotic I Walked with a Zombie and the shockingly subversive The Seventh Victim are still-tantalizing dreams of death that dare to embrace the darkness.

Finally! October is gonna be great from this alone!

Wonder how many discs it’ll be on. Both movies are pretty short so 1 would be fine I think…

It will come in a standard case for anyone worried about Criterion's often wacky packaging choices.

I hope this means that we'll be getting more Lewton in 4K down the line. I'd love for Cat People to get an upgrade.

Now THIS is what I've been waiting for. Beyond stoked. Would have been satisfied with a decent blu since the others have presented beautifully so far, but I ain't about to complain. Release of the year for me.

I thought the same thing! Guess it's that black bar at the top. And it seems they added an arbitrary slant as if they were like, "oh no it looks too much like our old design!"

Not only this, but these two are deserving of some Criterion special features. I loved what WA did with Curse of Frankenstein, but that feels like an outlier at this point...

Very excited about this. A huge Val Lewton fan here. Also, love that it's not the dreaded digipak. Win-win.

For fans who want to do a deep dive, this 11-part podcast on Val Lewton is fantastic from The Secret History Of Hollywood:
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...=1000385974076

And an episode of You Must Remember This:
https://www.youmustrememberthispodca...=1399921200958

I hope more of Val Lewton's films get the remastered treatment.

Interested to see how the restoration on Zombie looks.

The last time I watched it was the Warner DVD double-feature. There was at least one scene where the source looked like it was in rough shape.
