United Kingdom Exorcist II: The Heretic (Arrow Video)

Exorcist II: The Heretic Blu-ray on Zavvi now

Coming from Arrow on October 7th!

From John Boorman, the director of Point Blank and Deliverance, comes Exorcist II: The Heretic, a visionary metaphysical thriller that confounded audience expectations by delivering something unique and entirely unexpected.

It has been four years since the exorcism that saved the life of Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) and caused the deaths of Lankester Merrin (Max Von Sydow) and Damien Karras, the priests who helped her. Regan remembers nothing, but her therapist Dr Tuskin (Louise Fletcher) believes those memories are simply repressed and waiting. Meanwhile, Father Philip Lamont (Richard Burton) - his own faith shaken by a failed exorcism - is tasked by the Vatican with investigating Father Merrin, who faces posthumous charges of heresy for his controversial writings. His investigation will lead him to Africa, New York and Georgetown as he and Regan are drawn together in a spiritual battle that encircles the globe.

With an all-star cast, sublime cinematography, and a standout score from legendary composer Ennio Morricone, Exorcist II: The Heretic is a daring vision, packed with the kind of bold ideas and extraordinary images that Boorman would also explore in Zardoz and Excalibur. Forget what you think you know...

Good guess.... Prolly also means we're not gonna see a 4K of this movie anytime soon. Sigh, not getting any younger. The SF disc does suffice, but come on.

Guess Warner chose to not grant them the license

I'm not angry, SpacemanDoug...I'm just disappointed.

So I assume this would still be an upgrade over my 2018 Shout Blu?

I'm interested in seeing what Arrow does with the old scan. The Shout release did not help out the old master -- it was not especially well encoded, and came out at a time before they made some improvements on that end.

The SF disc had a newer master.

The Shout release was from a 2K scan

I should've clarified that as I was actually referring to THAT 2K scan as being old (2018). I had forgotten about the even older HD master that was on the Warner disc.

Has Arrow confirmed they are using the same source that Shout used?

Either way, the Shout disc I feel could be bettered simply with a stronger encode. They were a bit of a mixed bag up until a few years ago on that end. Even if it's minor improvement it'll be worth picking up.

I'll definitely grab this since apparently my mutant gift is buying blu-rays that soon become UHDs. I cant believe it won't be noticeably better than the Shout.

So is this still an 18 certificate? I’ve owned the Shout Factory BD for years and can’t remember anything in the film that would warrant a high rating.

Will stick with the US trilogy.

To all who want to have the best insight into filming Exorcist II, I highly recommend finding a copy of "The Making of Exorcist II: The Heretic Paperback" by Barbara Pallenberg.

It describes the production (set/location) challenges and actor negotiation/demands better than any talking head feature will do, makes for an interesting read if like me you like this train wreck for what it sets out to do.

Yes sir! Read it last year and can't recommend it enough for fans of the film. Boorman and his collaborator Rospo Pallenberg were so sure they were making something truly epic, it's very sad.

I'm sure Mark Kermode will be very happy.

"director of the forthcoming feature-length Exorcist II documentary, Heretics"

Would have been nice to include it?

I'd have loved for Kermode to a commentary for this!

I would be down if this was 4K, assume Shout will do it at some point.

Wouldn't surprise me if Arrow license and sell that documentary as a separate release down the track.
