Sony has been quietly taking the reigns on pre-code this year, this being their third release following Cocktail Hour and Man's Castle, which is more than even Warner Archive. Really excited for this one, Fay Wray is a favorite.

They're very slowly trickling out, but I'm curious what else they'll pull out of their sleeve. I'm hoping for Frank Borzage's No Greater Glory (1934). I bet if they continue, they'll put out some of the early Stanwyck & Capra films too.

Her Man (1930) - restoration premiered at TCMFF 2021 (this is a Pathé Exchange film that for some reason was acquired by Columbia at some point) Dirigible (1931) Twentieth Century (1934) (IIRC I heard a rumor a while back that this was supposedly with Criterion) Sony via Columbia Classics Vol. 5's bonus disc released these films on 4K and 1 in HD: The Belle Of Broadway (1926) (HD) The Desert Bride (1928) (4K) The Scarlet Lady (1928) (4K) Ladies Of Leisure (1930) (4K) And from Columbia Classics Volume 3, Little Orphan Annie (1932) was included as a bonus as well. Looking at digital HD copies, foreign Blu-rays, and (2K) Park Circus DCPs, here's what else seems to have HD masters: So This Is Love? (1928) The Way Of The Strong (1928) Platinum Blonde (1931) The Criminal Code (1931) The Miracle Woman (1931) The Fighting Marshal (1931) Behind The Mask (1932) Forbidden (1932) Love Affair (1932) Black Moon (1934) I'd guess that good number more probably have HD masters. I'm also hoping for No Greater Glory too, and hoping Sony keep those pre-code gates flowing! |

I certainly hope they keep those pre-Codes coming, but I'd also like to see a few Code era films too, like Pennies From Heaven (1936) and Three For The Show (1955) (I had hope for the latter after that wave of Jack Lemmon titles at the tail end of 2020, but there's been nothing further since then).

Definitely worth it for that price. It's just a little bread and butter programmer, but 1. Fay Wray is amazing and 2. Columbia pre-codes are so under seen because so few of them were distributed to television, so I'd like to encourage Sony to keep releasing as many as possible.
