In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom.

Whoa, the last time I saw Joan Chen was in Lust, Caution, some 15 years back.

There is an indirect meta reference to that film as Ang Lee is namechecked.

I’m glad Universal/Focus are releasing some indie films this summer that would otherwise go straight to VOD like Thelma and Babes, but the chains aren’t really taking them on (seems Cuckoo will be wider) so it’s just dominated by Deadpool and Wolverine, Twisters and not much else. Always frustrating when the only screening is a Picturehouse Film Club one off.

Ironically, I started watching Twin Peaks the night before I saw this and didn't know she was in this.

She's been in some quite good stuff, including The Last Emperor too.

I've added a link to Dolby's Creator Talks where the cast and crew discuss the making of the film.

Shot on ARRI Alexa 35, DÌdi was granted the Dolby Institute Fellowship - which means it was finished in Vision x Atmos.

Joan was recently on the movies that made me podcast. They don't discuss Didi, but a selection of films that had an impact on her.

I listened today and enjoyed it:
