Just recently upgraded the home theater to 4K:

Sony UBP-X800M2 and Benq HT3550

I'm running 35 ft of 8K HDMI Fiber Optic Cable 35ft, 4K120 8K@60Hz HDMI 2.1 Cable, ARISEN 48Gbps Ultra High Speed Slim HDMI Optical Audio Cable HDMI Cord, eARC HDR10 HDCP 2.2 Compatible with PS5 Xbox TV Projector I got from Amazon.

My only issue is that there is a serious lag between when I start a disc (or sometime just press play) and getting an image on screen. The sound is fine, but the screen is black for about 8-10 seconds.

Cable issue? Setting issue?

Any help from this fine community would be awseome!

Hello. I just posted in the Hitchcock thread but felt I should post here too. I just discovered all the 4K Hitchcock releases are from New 4K scans. So here is my post.

Okay so all 3 4K sets can be had for $110 before tax on Amazon right now. Very tempted to purchase them and grab a cheap 4K player... don't need Dolby Vision or anything like that. What are your guys thoughts on some of these $150 players? Just need a unit that will play the discs so that I can see these restorations and not break in a year lol

You're better of picking up one of 400 range of Panasonic players.

Check to see if there any on clearance close to you. The open box deals are very good.

Get a Sony UBP-x700. I own two and have had zero issues with either. Other than the mildly annoying requirement to manually turn on Dolby vision, these players have served me well for years.

Unless you plan to be exceptionally rough on the player and need something of higher quality materials, you'll be very happy with this model.

It's been a while since I read about the Panasonic Top menu trick, but assuming that still works on new models (I would assume it does) then a Panasonic DP-UB150-K may also be worth considering as it'd play the 4k/Blu Rays from the US but also may be able to play some Region B blu rays as well using the aforementioned top menu trick.

For a few years now I've debated picking up a higher quality player, but the Sony's have worked so well I just haven't seen the need and so I'd recommend giving it a serious look.

Both of these will be on my list, good prices too. I actually have 3 region free blu-ray players(one per TV) so that isn't a concern. One would think spending money on 3 region free players that I would have gotten a 4K by now lol

I have one of these in my bedroom and it works well. The only catch, and it's probably due to having an older version than you, is it sometimes stutters on the third layer of a 4k disc. Apart from that it's pretty much flawless.

May I ask some totally "newbie" questions?

I'm a completely out of the loop when it comes to UHD players.
To make matters worse, my country (Portugal) isn't big on film physical media, so it's hard to find any UHD players (or even BD players) in shops, or even online, so I'm a bit limited in terms of choices.

I'm moving to a new house soon, and I'll be looking to purchase a 4K TV in 3-4 months, but I wanted to buy the player before that, so I can watch some of the UHD titles I already own.

Panasonic lists the following players for the country:

DP-UB9000 (too expensive for me at the moment)
DP-UB150 (affordable, but I believe it lacks Dolby Vision support)
They also used to list the DP-UB820, but it's gone now, so I don't think it's currently being sold.

Sony lists the following players:

UBP-X800M2
UBP-X500
UBP-X700
UBP-X800

In terms of local online stores, I only see stock for the following players:

Panasonic DP-UB150
Sony UBP-X700

---

Of the above lists of players, which player would you recommend?

The two players above are the only ones I can get in the immediate, but I think the DP-UB150 lacks Dolby Vision, and the UBP-X700 has some sort of flawed manual implementation, so maybe the best option would be to go for one of the others, despite needing to place an order and likely wait some weeks for it.

Additionally, are any of the players above able to made region-free for Blu-Ray discs and DVDs (more importantly, BDs), through software or some controller "hack"/code?
Sadly, unlike with the DVD era, I can't find any store locally that may be able to modify the player for this purpose.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Most info I find online relates to players available in the US, and in Europe some of these players are either unavailable, or have different variants, so I'm hoping to find a "mid-tier" player, available in Europe, that has support for all formats.

thank you

If you're not getting a TV that supports Dolby Vision the 150 will be okay, but it's a budget player. The 820 is your best bet, it does go in and out of stock, but you should be able to find one on Amazon.

Okay guys I need some help badly...so I got some posts about purchasing a 4K player just a few posts higher from a few months back because I wanted and purchased those new Hitchcock restorations. Got the discs back then but took me a bit to grab a player...I went with the LG 4K Ultra-HD Blu-Ray Disc Player - UBK80. I got quite a few 4K discs as I have been purchasing combo packs for the new restorations on blu for many films for some time so last night I broke out the LG player and went to watch Scarface first on 4K and immediately I was put off by some very odd motion to the picture(almost like the soap opera effect) but that is turned off on my TV. I then checked the 4K disc of Leon...presented the same unwatchable(to me) wierd motion as the Scarface disc. I popped in the blu-ray of both films from their combo packs in the 4K player and they looked great. I don't know what gives. The only thing that is odd is that I get this message when I turn on the unit:

We are adjusting the picture quality for you to experience a better UHD screen. You can change the settings in Settings > General > External Device Manager > Input Signal Plus.

If I go through the path to Input Signal Plus it just says HDMI 1
HDMI 2

I checked all my other TV settings and they are all still the same with motion smoothing/judder reduction all the way off. If the player was messing with the settings(which it doesn't appear to be even though that message pops up) wouldn't the blu-rays also play back the same way? I am at a loss, hoping you guys who have been in the 4k arena can send some insight.

I got a 4K Samsung TV, the LG 4k player, just purchased a brand new hi-speed HDMI cable(I tried a different one too with no change)

Edit: The plot thickens. So I took the LG 4K player and hooked it up to my old 1080p Samsung TV from around 2010 and played the 4K discs....of course they are being downscaled but no motion issues. So my TV settings are being messed with by the 4K player. I spent over two hours trying to mess with settings with no luck, man technology can be frustrating at times. If I have to settle playing my 4K discs on my old 40 inch 1080p TV vs my 85 inch 4K I am going to be upset.
