Arrow YOUTH IN REVOLT (Michael Cera)

Quote:
I’m not sure what to make of this one. It’s obvious that Michael Cera needs to branch out if he’s going to keep a steady career going, and he’s certainly doing that with “Youth in Revolt.” Cera plays a 16-year-old who desperately wants his “dream girl,” Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), to notice him. As any sane person would do, he creates a bad-ass alter-ego for himself who can get the job done and secure the girl. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Oh man. This is either genius or total crap [Matt's note: I'm coming down on the side of genius]; I haven’t figured out which. It’s directed by Miguel Arteta, who is probably best known for Jennifer Aniston’s “The Good Girl,” but has also directed some episodes of well-known TV shows, including my least favorite “The Office” episode “Dawali.” However, he wins back some favor because he directed an episode of “Freaks and Geeks”.

The film is based on the book “Youth in Revolt: The Journals of Nick Twisp,” which contains the first three parts of a six-part saga. The film co-stars Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Fred Ward, Ari Graynor, and Jean Smart. “Youth in Revolt” hits theatres on October 30th.

Matt's 2nd note: Those who think that Cera can only play one kind of character are about to get a wake-up call; however, they need to understand the difference between limited range and specific approach. An actor can have a certain style but still create new characters. It would be like saying Al Pacino was playing the same character in "Dog Day Afternoon" and "The Godfather Parts I & II" because he's a quiet guy that is ready to explode at any moment. The test for actors isn't that you can recognize the kind of performance they give but if you can predict how they'll play a character depending on the scene.

And if you still don't believe me about Cera, just look up "Clark & Michael" or even just watch this video and then feel bad for doubting]

See here!

I'm tired of Michael Cera. Great on Arrested Development but not in any of the films he does now. Pass.

This looks amazing. It's like Fight Club but he's a teenager and knows he has an alternate identity.

Default Released Date Moved.

Hey,

UPDATE

RELEASE DATE MOVED FROM OCTOBER TO JANUARY

Quote:
Youth in Revolt, the Miguel Arteta adaptation of C.D. Payne’s novel starring Michael Cera, has been doing well as it plays the Toronto International Film Festival. Reviews have, in general, been more pleased with the film than I would have expected. Peter liked it, Cinematical said Michael Cera is “wickedly hilarious” in a performance that is “easily the best of his career,” and indieWire says it suggests more versatility to Cera than some would have allowed.

But now, according to an email blast from PR firm Allied, The Weinstein Company is moving Youth from October 30 of this year to January 15, 2010. What’s the story?

The Weinstein Company has been the object of great speculation over the last few weeks. While Inglourious Basterds did much better than expected, the party line is that the outfit doesn’t have much money to throw around. There were rumors that Rob Marshall’s Nine was being pushed to next year (denied by TWC) and Harvey’s notable buy of Tom Ford’s A Single Man. That deal reportedly came with an Oscar promise to Ford. This is after a significant delay for The Road, which was finally set to release in October, but was then moved to a Thanksgiving date: November 25.

By this time of the year, Harvey Weinstein seems to focus on one thing: Oscar. And while Youth in Revolt is being pegged as a decent film, realistically speaking it is not an Oscar contender at all. A Single Man, on the other hand, is definitely a contender. Given that TWC doesn’t have a serious amount of money to throw around, the obvious conclusion to draw is that Youth is being pushed to make room for Tom Ford’s movie.

And the January date might not be a terrible one. There’s nothing like Youth in Revolt hitting then. The film will now compete with genre films Daybreakers, which opens the week before, and The Book of Eli, also opening Jan 15. TWC also has Hoodwinked 2 slated for the same date, but that’s no competition for Youth.

Enjoy.

Saw VI would have owned it in the box office.

I didn't want to see it until I saw his mustache.

But still... This actors sucks. How he continues to find work is beyond me. In a romantic comedy, shouldn't the male be attractive? He's like a smaller, skinnier, more sober Seth Rogen. He is beyond typecast...
