Does it bother you only owning part of a series of films?

I remember watching Man of Steel and loving it but offloading it when Batman Vs Superman and Justice league were poor. I didnt see the point of owning the first part of a story.

Thor Ragnorak was great but the first two being dull as dishwater meant do I really want just the third part of series??

The next Joker film doesnt fill me with hope so Ive just taken the first one out of my collection...

These all being superhero films is purely coincidental by the way. If you get a scenario where three films are great and one is just ok I can cope with that for completism sake but im getting more careful these days of loving the first film of a series, buying it, then routinely buying the next three on release just to find out three of the 4 films ive bought are crap?

Anyone else factor this in or are you ok buying part 2 here, part 5 there?

Exceptions for me are when each film stands alone. For example Jaws 3 and Jaws the Revenge being toss doesnt stop me owning rhe first two.

I don't know, I guess I don't buy many of those types of films, and I don't really think about it much. Even when I do, a whole series is usually sold in a single affordable package, so why not. I might then double dip on better editions for just the films that I really like.

What I would definitely not do is get rid of the films I like and already own just because other films in a series are not to my liking.

No I don't see the point in owning a film like The Expendables 4 since It sucked. I am happy to have to parts that I liked.

I've been known to pay more for a single film in order not to have an awful sequel bundled in (for instance, circa 2001 I paid for the US import of The Blues Brothers DVD so not to own The Blues Brothers 2000, which was bundled with the first film in the UK at that time).

I support the idea of curating one's collection and trimming items from it. I usually do it when upgrading something, but since I don't have a good channel/habit to regularly do it here in Estonia, I pay less mind to other motivations for pruning my shelves.

Having a complete series where I have to like every movie in it, is not one of my personal criteria. For example, I have Exorcist and Exorcists III, as those are generally considered the good movies in the series, and I haven't bothered checking out the others. Although recently the chat in Exorcist II thread and learning that Scorsese liked it best, has made me curious about that one, so I'm considering getting it to complete the partial series I, II, III.

I also just bought The Shadow Boxing and just missed being able to get the last remaining copy from Amazon UK with the predecessor The Spiritual Boxer. So I'll probably end up watching the second movie first.

Then again I did get the In the Line of Duty series from Eureka, even though I was mostly interested in just the first two.

So the idea of a complete series does kind of factors in my decisions, but to a lesser extent than your case. For example I would certainly never pull Psycho from my collection if Psycho IV turns out to be a turd (the only one I haven't watched).

Also I've seen Fast and Furious 1 and 5, no others, and I'm fine with that.

On the other hand I would probably never consider getting some Harry Potter movies and skipping others, despite that I know I like a couple of them much more than others.

So I would say it really depends on how much I think that each series needs to be coherent for enjoyment - is it in the nature of the story or is it a series more for cashing in on the success of previous films.

Harry Potter feels like very continuous that keeps referring back to things introduced from the beginning throughout the series, and it feels coherent only as a complete series. Fast and Furious feels like each movie is meant to be standalone entertainment, and even if they try to make some connections to the past I don't trust that those are essential.

Now you mention it ive never had a problem only owning The Exorcist without the next two? Maybe that much time passed between them and beung from different directors helped me seperate them enough in my head.

I agree with the above on Psycho too but theres a world of difference between the original and the straight to video IV.

Man of Steel was great but the events of the final fight set up Batmans distrust of kryptonions for Batman Vs Superman which I thought was poor.

I mean, could anyone just own Fellowship of the ring if they hated the next two?

There may be more factors than I first thought.

Having gaps in my collection used to stress me out but I don’t have the room to hoard bad films anymore.

I remember having to force myself to get rid of Halloween 4 & 5, which I hated.

Having said that, I didn’t like Halloween Ends and I’m still stuck with that because it’s (the weakest) part of a story arc. But logic and me are barely on speaking terms…

I’ve given up on Superhero films. It’s like eating Play-Doh.

Youve hit the nail on the head there. Its having to buy a weak part of an overall story arc you like.

Like I said in my first post it doesnt bother me if the films work as standalones.

I used to buy all the Eureka martial arts films when they first did the slips, all the top tier Sammo, YB and Jackie stuff, plus Duel to the Death, some Wang Yu. Once they'd rinsed the classics and began to drop down a tier or two, I started to feel like I was collecting for sunk costs reasons and stopped. I think I was also a little saturated by HK action comedy and was enjoying the films less as a result.

Fast forward a couple of years after a healthy break, and I'm in the mood for more and I want to catch up. I'm currently pondering whether I should finally order The Inspector Wears Skirts or get all four films from 88 'just in case'. Hmm. There's also stuff like She Shoots Straight, the Angela Mao films, Jet Li stuff from 88. And I will almost certainly buy Shawscope Vol.3 even though I have little interest in most of the films. That said, there's so much amazing supplementary material with those sets, I won't be disappointed. I expect it'll go like this until there's nothing more to release.

Fortunately, I don't have any similar feelings for any other genre or I would be destitute.

Virtually every famous blockbuster horror film of the last 50 years has terrible or at best completely superfluous sequels - there are plenty of films that are technically film series but I prefer to treat as standalones - The Omen, Jaws, Psycho, Poltergeist and The Howling are ones where you really can pretend the others don't exist quite easily.

Then there are sequels you don't want but you just end up with because it's cheaper or easier. I don't need every Die Hard or a million Freddy Krueger films, two Terminators is enough, two Home Alones are fine, but it's sometimes harder to avoid them than to buy them. I don't want Jurassic Park III on my shelves but Universal have made a different decision for me.

And who wants Airplane II in their house?

Doesn't bother me at all! If they made them all good it might bother me more. As it stands I'm very happy just having T1 & T2 on Blu, Jurassic Park 1 and the 3 good Star Wars films on 4K. Had it not been for a good deal on the Alien Anthology box, I'd probably just have Alien & Aliens too.

I used to be a completist. I mean, it used to REALLY bother me if I didn't have every single installment or series. Now, I'm fine with it. For example, I'm a big Dragon Ball fan and I doubt I'll ever own the 131 episodes of Dragon Ball Super. Unlike DB, DBZ, and GT, I can't see myself rewatching that series.

Nope.

For example, I have Alien, the first and the best IMO, and Alien 3 only because Brian Glover is in it and once he is taken out then its time to stop the film.

Jaws and Jaws 2 are excellent, but I would only buy Jaws: The Revenge to see Michael Caine.

I have never seen it (Jaws 4) but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built and it is terrific.
