Question Stupid Question

I have a Samsung Q65FN. It's not a 3D tv. I'm pretty sure there is no way I'll be able to watch 3D Blu-rays with that display. Is that correct?

There’s a device called “3D Video Wizard” which let’s you play 3D Blu-rays on standard TVs in anaglyph 3D (red & blue).

To my knowledge, it’s discontinued and hard to come by.

Yes, there is a company that makes devices for this. No comment on quality as I’ve never tried one myself, but there are reviews online for them.

Nearly impossible to find a used 3D Video Wizard. I do have one and it's surprisingly effective considering it's anaglyphic. It does the job and its great to have a standard HD set suddenly become 3D, but it obviously does have limitations in depth and overall picture compared to stereoscopic along with some eye strain. On a scale of one to ten comparing the same disc to a true 3D monitor I would categorize it around 7.5 which is not bad by any stretch.

Almost all of our 3-D bluray releases over the last couple of years have also included an anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D version for those who do not have the more advanced 3-D display technology. In these cases no extra gear is required and a pair of red/cyan 3-D glasses are also included.

Titles which currently include both advanced 3-D blu-ray versions as well as anaglyphic 3-D versions:

WINGS OF THE HAWK
DYNASTY
SHOGUN WOMEN
TREASURE OF THE 4 CROWNS
DIAMOND WIZARD
PRISON GIRLS
THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE
BWANA DEVIL
SILENT MADNESS
FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN

Our upcoming releases are all slated to include anaglyph versions, as well as some of our older titles which will be re-released soon: https://3dfilmarchive.com/available-film-restorations/

I did a cursory search on your Samsung Q65FN. While being a slightly older monitor, it appears to have a decent wide color gamut so anaglyphic 3-D should fair well.

And of course if you ever bought a 3-D projector or delved into a compatible VR system, the included superior 3-D bluray version would still be on tap.

Our 3-D bluray versions also allow for standard 2-D viewing if so desired.

There's also the HDFury X4 that also is compatible with the 3DFury firmware to be 3D enabled.

There is also a just-out-of-beta-testing device (usb-A bluetooth dongle) that will allow many shutter glasses to synch with the playback on windows pc's to fast-refresh-rate modern TV's, so many TV model's from the last few years capable of "true" 120hz refresh rate or above could be used to display 3D films with reasonable (very low) flicker.

When I receive mine, hopefully in a week or two, I'll post the results on how well it works and all the details. It won't playback blu-ray's directly (would have to be first converted to something compatible with the player software under windows), it will only work with windows (10 or 11) machines and with TV's capable of true 120hz or higher refresh rates and certain (most, actually) types of 3D active shutter-glasses (RF, DPLink, IR, BT3D, some others), also as long as the glasses are fast enough to support the desired refresh rates. It will also work with some combinations of PC's and older TV's, but the flicker and/or ghosting in those cases is probably going to be problematic, so it's not a good universal solution.

It's probably not going to be for everyone as a certain proficiency with windows computers will be necessary, but it may be a good solution for finally watching 3D content in full-color on many available modern TV's and not need to rely on projectors or VR goggles exclusively.

The dongle is under $90 IIRC, and compatible 3D glasses can often be found for well under $40, so at least it's not an expensive option if you already own a fast-refresh-rate TV set and a half-way-decent windows PC or laptop that supports at least 1080p/120hz output over HDMI.

Could you point me in the direction of this dongle? Thanks

Sure. I was going to wait a bit until I got my production unit shipped before opening a thread about it, but I guess there is enough early interest in it to justify it.
