When watching a movie i have it set on movie, and say a dark part comes in and i can visibly see the screen dim, and then a bright part comes and you can see the screen lighten up again. Any idea of what this might be from, is it just a setting or what is it.

The movies are being played throught a ps3 via HDMI.. could it possibly be a cheap cable or what

sounds like some type of auto dimming feature. the display automatically dims or lowers the backlight during dark scenes. I have this feature on my Panasonic LCD, its called "AI Picture". Its designed to deliver a deeper black level during dark scenes...............but i just find it annoying. you should be able to turn it off.
