Appeal? Almost nobody wants to live in an apartment. Say it like it's a choice for most.

Sorry, that was bad phrasing. I guess I was reflecting on how some people would rather live in the city and rent forever instead of moving to where they would be able to afford a home.

I used to live in San Fransisco and I would have rented forever if I didn't move to a place with a much lower cost of living.

I personally consider what you said (highlighted in bold by me) was very profound, clean and sharp to the point.

I live in an appartment, but I have plenty of space, but I still like to not waste space. If I needed to go to binders to keep the discs and artwork, then I would keep the boxes, storing them in a less important area.

I use adjustable wall shelving which really helps in maximising storage efficiency.

For example, just in a small corner space with shelving taking up 6ft 3in in height by 3ft 4in wide to a depth of just over 6 inches, I can store well over 500 Blu-rays and DVDs and nothing is being squeezed tight.

I have seen people using standard book cases, which seem OK but are not really best suited for DVDs and BDs, because of their depth, and the ones that come as self assembly, made of chipboard, are f****** heavy and not as strong as real wood. I have some, so I know.

Thanks again. Some really nice storage solutions there for DVDs and BDs.

If I needed to store my media more compactly, then that is the way I would go.

but if space is such an issue then ditch the cases and put them in sleeves.

I don't use any streaming service, but why does it bother you if anyone else likes using a streaming service.

What I find a real waste of space is the height of Blu-ray HD and 4K cases. Up to 35mm could be chopped off the height of a box, a 20% reduction in size!

I find the most efficient way to store DVDs and BDs is using Spur aluminium T Slot shelving, there is also Twin Slot steel shelving systems, which are more common. The pine wood shelves I use are 165mm wide and 20mm thick (no sagging).
VHS were huge and the case was basically a thin peace of paper on most that did nothing. But you are missing the obvious. The width and height are there because you need an easily readable title on the spine.

It doesn't bother me if anyone uses a streaming service. That would be a bridge too far. It is what it is. But I don't use any streaming service, I despise them and I DO take pleasure in anything unfortunate that happens to the services. But I have never and would never give someone crap for using one. One can cheer on the downfall of something without being an ass to the people who partake in the use of that something..

I can assure you I am not missing the obvious. I have not mentioned at all reducing the width of the cases for the very reason you mention quite rightly. I dislike the thin DVD/BD cases, because of the problem of reading the title on the spine. A CD case is only 125mm high. Shaving off 20mm to 35mm of the height of a Blu-ray case is not going to affect the readability of the title on the spine, just a quick glance at my collection I can see there is plenty of spare space on the spines.

A photo from the internet, as an example.

If there was a choice of a full size case or a midi size case, I would go for the shorter midi case.

If the tide turns with physical becoming more mainstream again, then IMO packaging size needs to be reduced for space saving and reduce plastic for environmental reasons.

The thin cases I dislike.

1. Scratches.
2. Cases are meant to be displayed.
3. Loses collector's value.
4. Easier to steal more.

Just make them smaller. I didn't have trouble reading CD spines. You can order them, you know.

Although I don’t use binders like the above, I do use their other sleeve and box products for some of my standard editions. Probably have around 250 of my Blu-ray’s stored this way.

As I flip through I can see the entire front or back cover as well as the spine, has a similar feeling as flipping through comic books. Although I don’t fill mine to capacity for that reason, you can easily fit 80 in a 10 inch box and still see the full cover, (about the size 16 standard cases would take up, so 5x space savings).

Just keep a small box of cases of various colors and capacities should you ever decide to resell, however doubtful. It also helps me prioritize which movies I want collectors editions of, and which version I should buy SEs of.

I've just started overflowing from the four full-size and three half-size Billy bookshelves and I want to go down this route, but dear god the price of doing the whole collection like this and being in Australia doesn't make it cheaper....

I used the storage solutions only with my DVDs and BDs. My 4K disc collection is still on traditional shelves.

I had to greatly reduce my online/digital presence because I had an account breach. I don't know how, but they got into my Walmart account, they were trying to get into Amazon, Microsoft and Apple as well. I kept getting 2FA emails. I'm not sure how since I use different, secure passwords on all services. I almost wonder if they got into my email so I had to change it on a bunch of things and delete the email account. Thankfully I didn't have my CC stored on any of these services (I only ever used gift cards).

But basically all I have now for digital stuff is Vudu. I'm staying with discs for the foreseeable future. I tried to watch a couple newer movies digitally and the banding just became bothersome. I'm not sure if it's because I'm on a wireless connection with my Roku Ultra or what. But it was kind of annoying.

What do you all use for bookshelves for storage? I'm thinking about putting one or two in my extra room and putting my CaseLogic binders on them.

homemade none-fancy shelves made of pine (like a book case but build for films). Put BD cases directly on.

use L bracket f to hold most shelves shelves like the pic below

that way they have some play (turn bracket and now it is 1" (or what ever it amounts to) higher if needed

but if, like you put it, you wish all streaming services to disappear wouldn't that also mean none of the people that like streaming will be able to use it?

that was used as an example of what is available if space is really an issue for someone

now to answer your points

1) I don't have or ever usede this one so it might be made out of sand paper but from back in the day I have a 10 CD holder and I have put CDs, DVDs, BDs and UHD BDs and not once did I have one get scratched. Plus CD/DVD are soft plastic while BD and UHD BD have a hard coating on them that makes them much harder to scratch.

2) yes and if someone has infinite space then having the front (instead of spine) showing makes a much better display, but this wasn't a discussion of how to better display cases but how to better save space and something like what used a picture of can be slid under a bed of a tiny one bed room apartment if needed.

3)not sure what that means. I buy films to enjoy them. There are the rare exceptions where they might keep their value and maybe gain value but I am assuming I will get next to nothing if I tried selling my thousands of films.
plus

a) I don't know everyone's situation. Maybe someone can leave the cases at their parents house, maybe the person has a storage locker and does not feel like going back and forth every time they want to see a film.

b) if someone has a few that will gain in value and many that will not he can always keep those few in cases and the rest in sleeves.

4) if your point in 3 is no one wants just the film (and the case holds the value) why do you think it will be different if it comes from a criminal?
